Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Alpha Five and indexes

As you build an application Alpha creates indexes for you. When an application is finished, due to changes in design along the way there may be indexes that are not necessary. Is there a way to determine which indexes may be deleted?

a good list of the indexes and why they are there would really help.

      Hi Dave,
I think why they are there is the part he is trying to figure out!

        Hi Robin,

        Kinda figured that.

To the best of my knowledge, there is no way of knowing why someone made the index except memory or a list.

I do not make a list of indexes, but do not have many and trust my decision of the past that there was a valid reason for the index. I have looked and wondered why I did it though.

Alpha makes 1 index per table(not always) as far as I know. Haven't seen or heard of more than that. I would delete and index that I did not make myself.

I referring primarily where Alpha has created the Index. Alpha depending on your design will create more than one index per table. I have one table where Alpha has created 19 indexes already.

That table is part of a set where I link to the same table a few times with different filter expressions.

Delete the indexes & alpha will rebuild the ones it needs.

But then what happens to the ones you created??

This is why all the index names I create (vs. those created by A5) end with an underscore. (Some people think my naming conventions are ridiculous but I find them very useful because of things like this.) When done developing/debugging/editing the app, I can delete all but the "....._" indexes then open each table, set, form, and report (all of which are done automatically using the "Open Layouts Once" utility in my AIMS_Grab_bag) to rebuild the ones Alpha needs to create.

If I want/need further verification that all my own indexes are still being used, I run my AIMS_App_Analyzer to get a list of where all index names are used. Those that aren't used will be shown as "No reference found". This is why all my utilities were created - because I wanted them to make my own development easier and more accurate. If I had created them just to sell them for profit, I can guarantee they would cost a LOT more than $19.

EDIT: FYI - The indexes created by A5 can't reliably be checked using the AIMS_App_Analyzer because many of them are not referenced in any code. Many of them are only required for things like sets, groups in reports, previous value lookups, etc. and will turn up as "No reference found" even though they are still needed. This is why removing them and letting A5 rebuild them works best for "cleanup". However, any index that you create should be referenced somewhere in the code and/or expressions which means the AIMS_App_Analyzer can find it.
