Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

data changing in mulitple records when only one is being changed

    hello again:

i'm not sure if this is a bug or not.

in the attached files open the test/stockledger/stockledger document.

go to the forms tab and open the main meun form

on the main menu press the view gl button

click on gl_datet and sort ascending (a- z)

scroll down to the date 10/18/2010 and there is a single transaction on that date

on the first account (1111) change the date to 11/18/2010 and observe the data in all 4 records.

when you type the first character it changes all the accounts to 1111 and has that balance displayed in all 4 records.

click on any field in the next record and the data returns to it's original state.

if someone could please try this and see if it is happening on another computer. if it is then i think it is a bug.

    thanks in advance!

    regards,

Ed, your database includes tables that are scattered across multiple directories. We can't easily open it here unless the directory structure on our machine matches yours, and then only if we scatter the tables in exactly the same way you have chosen to do. Will try to overcome this, but wanted to give you a heads up. By choosing to put your tables in multiple directories your database is not portable. This may bite you later on if you ever need to move it to a new machine. -- tom

Ed, take a look at the attached screenshot.

The tables listed in red are part of the set supporting your form. We can't open your form cause the tables in red are not present in the database folder. They live on your "D:" drive.

Sorry I can't help you until you can furnish a sample I can open without spending the afternoon figuring out how to open it.

            hello tom:'

thank you for your response. i had a look at the properties and indeed they are scattered in this file. not sure what went on, but i'll repackage them and check before i post. the original files are all in one directory so it is something that i did while compressing them.

            thanks again!!

Can't find the form you mention at the top.

Pls furnish step by step instructions for us to follow to see the problem with the latest tables and set. Then include another narrative description of the problem referencing the current tables and set.

hello again and thank you for being patient!

click on the set to open and then switch to browse view using F8.

click on the gl_date and sort ascending.

scroll down to the date 10/18/2010 and there is a single posting for that date. if you attempt to change the date on account 1111 it will (on my computer) place the account 1111 on all 4 records and duplicate the data for the 4 records. clicking on the next record will restore the data. i noticed on this record, however it is present on all records.

boy, i hope i get it right this time.

                  thanks again tom!

Re: data changing in mulitple records when only one is being changed

Ed, on my system here the date is changed on all four rows. This is as it should be. There are four rows because there are 4 linked child table records. Your browse is displaying composite records, not actual records. The "date" field (column) is coming from the parent table in your set.

The behavior of the account number is odd, but not a matter of any consequence. The actual account number field values does not change. This field (column) comes from the linked child table.

My clients have difficulty understanding set based browses. I don't use them. One table per browse is my motto.

                      hi tom:

thanks again! as you indicated it is only a visual oddity. i usually stay away from set based browses as well. this was just a one-shot effort tofetch some data.

                      thank you!!
