Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: Invoicing totals

    Whats the point in using the tablesum or dbsum function in the field rules than?
    You asked for an alternative to a posting field rule.
    There can be only one.

      Tried refreshing the form and the subtotal object. neither works. Even opening the Invoice form doesn't refresh anything. I guess will have to use the total() function like in Alpha sports.

        Re: Invoicing totals

        Stan,
        I was trying to not use posting, because I didn't trust it. I was hoping there was somewhere that I can create these calculations so that when I need to view,or print an invoice, or know a particular customers balance that I would not have to redefine these calculations over and over.
        How about if I don't use these functions in field rules, but use the total() functions (as in Alpha sports) on the invoice itself, and store the calculated fields into real fields when exiting an invoice.

            If this is what you're trying to do, there is a way to do it by setting up a calculated field. I actually have it working here online. (The first field is optional, and for the second field try: *R010-127 (with the asterisk)

            This was my first attempt at building a "web app" with a5 desktop data.....
            And it's a work in progress, so go easy on me. ~ I'm presently redoing it (and expanding on the concept) with v11.

            (The yearly point totals (numbers in red) are created on the fly. I mostly do desktop development right now, and I had this working on the desktop first. On the desktop, it's worth noting that the totals are displayed within the child record, and not on the parent form though.) ~ I'm running backups right now, but if you want to see the code I used for the embedded browse, I'll be happy to put it here late. It's sweet, simple, and short.

                Re: Invoicing totals

                So now I have this calculation
                c_subtotal = total(INV_detail->Extended,GRP->INV_Hedr)

                That displays the correct subtotal for the invoice. How do I update a real field "Subtotal" with this value. I have tried Action scripting set field value and set object value , and it doesn't work.

                  Re: Invoicing totals

                  Subtotal is a field in the parent of the set upon which the form is based? C_subtotal is the object name of the calculated field on the form?

                  Code the form's cansave event

                  tbl = table.current()
                  tbl.subtotal = C_subtotal.value

                    I'll paste the snippet of code later tonight. (Check back in the AM) ~ I'm presently "sync-ing" a data drive online.
                    The code snippet you generated looks familiar (c_subtotal = total(INV_detail->Extended,GRP->INV_Hedr) but believe I did something a bit differently.

                    As I recall, there was a trick involved because I built it separate from the form. ~Using an embedded browse, from within the browse tab. (a5 wasn't exposing all the objects needed in the Xbasic explorer.)

                    PS: Having seen your next post, I think you may be experiencing a similar problem as to what I encountered:

                            Tried this also, didn't work.

                            tbl = table.current()
                            tbl.SUBTOTAL = total(INV_detail->Extended,GRP->INV_Hedr)

                              Same case, not.

                              If I paste it into the interactive window it returns:
                              c_subtotal not found
                              In the interactive window, table.current() is maningless. You would use

                              tbl = table.open("Inv_hedr")
                              tbl.change_begin()
                              tbl.subtotal = C_subtotal.value
                              tbl.change_end(.T.)
                              tbl.close()

                              The code I gave you was intended for a form based on a set where inv_hedr is the parent, as I specified, so you don't have to open it. Further the onsave event which only fires immediately before the record is saved, thus obviating the need to put the table in change mode.

                              Subtotal is a field in the parent of the set upon which the form is based?
