Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Change default internally used browser from IE to other such as chrome or firefox...

    Hi there,

Is it possible to indicate to alpha that your preferred browser is something other than IE?

I have not been able to use IE on my development platform for some time now and I have tried many remedies short of wiping the hard disk and reinstalling operating system and everything else.

The problem is that alpha always tries to load external links through IE - it doesn't seem to take any notice of what your preferred browser is.
I have attached screen grabs of the typical error screen I get and the blank ie screen I get. I also regularly get error in the script on this page errors. I don't know if this is linked in some way...

    Thanks in advance,

    Paul

Are your file associations set correctly to open html pages with something other than IE?

      There can be only one.

Re: Change default internally used browser from IE to other such as chrome or firefox

Have you gone into the "tools" or "options" for the browser you want to be the default and explicitly set it to be the default?

I ran a test. I created a form, with two text fields. I made one text field a "URL" type and left the other as text. I entered "www.cnn.com" into the first and "www.cnn.com/index.html" into the second. I added a button that runs a "sys_open" on the contents of the second text field. Then I tested with my default browser (Firefox) and Firefox was used to open both fields. I set IE and then Chrome to be the default browser. Each time the default browser was used to open the field contents.

So perhaps, IE is still set to be the default on your system.

            Hi Finian,

No I haven't done that either - will look at both suggestions and get back to you both.

            Thanks,

            Paul

I have checked the file associations for htm and html and both are associated with firefox and I have checked that firefox is the default browser in the browser's advanced options general tab...
I wonder if Alpha uses a registry entry for default browser that is somehow still set to IE
I'll post a question to Alpha support about this. For me it is more hassle than anything else, at least I know now after Finian's reply that it works as I would expect it to.
              Thanks to you both.

Managed to install IE8 on my XP machine. This seems to have cured the problems. Sorry about the fuss.
