Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Easier way to delete row from dialog or grid?

    I have a read-only grid which brings up a dialog when user needs to edit the data.

    I would like to have the ability for the user to delete the row via a button on the read-only grid. I watched Selwyn's video #85 which is doing much more and more complicated than I was hoping to get into. I do not really want to make the grid editable, because I do not want the save, undo buttons, etc. and don't really want the user editing at the grid level as it does not contain all of the controls (yes I realize I could disable the controls that are there).

    Surely, I am serious and stop calling me Shirley, there is an easier way to delete a row from a read-only grid or even a button on the pop-up dialog than all of the complicated programming as shown on video #85. Ideally a button that asks for confirmation, deletes, and then updates the grid.

    Hope....hope....hope

    Thanks..

    One way to do this Andrew is to make the grid editable, but then go to the grid's properties, and uncheck the boxes to "Allow Update" and "Allow Insert." That only leaves "Allow Delete" as the available edit option. Would that work for you?

      You are, of course, correct. Thank you.

      Do you know if there is a way to move the delete check box from the right side of the row to left side next to the save and undo icon?

        One way is in the update settings, Customization, set the delete record control to none. Then change the first field in the grid to a freeform layout and add
        Code:
         Delete {controlDef.system:delete}
        along with your first field's name in curly brackets to the freeform layout.

        You end up with something like this: http://screencast.com/t/gdLZJPvimhzV

          Thank you Jim, that worked just like you showed in the screencast.

          Do you know if it is possible to change the delete from a checkbox to a button? I have an <edit> button next to it that calls up a dialog and would prefer the delete be like the edit.

          Therein lies my biggest problem with AlphaFive. Even when someone has graciously, as you have, given me the commands to accomplish something, I cannot do any further research on my own. For instance, when in Alphapedia, I have gone through 5 pages of results on a search on "controlDef.system" that do not contain anything about your solution. I cannot find anything, anywhere about your solution and can only assume you magically conjured this up just for me, as have so many other people with solutions that have helped me. Is Alphapedia the wrong place to be looking? Frustrating......

          I have no doubt that AlphaFive is great product that will do way more than I need it to do, but it is a son of a gun to learn and research. Codeless Ajax my butt. This forum, Selwyn's videos, and personal tutoring from Steve Workings are the only reason I have made this much progress. But I digress, I appreciate your help with this solution and if you have a suggestion for better function and method references, would be even more appreciated.

            Re: Easier way to delete row from dialog or grid?

            Thanks Andrew, I appreciate the feeback and your sense of humor.

            After you've used Alpha for a while you sort of get used to looking for answers in many places. First, I look in the builder of the component for help. In the case of "controlDef.system" I didn't have to conjure up anything. It was there in the help for the component where you selected to not use the delete check box. Next, I search the Wiki - I used to hate it but I'm slowly starting to be able to find what I'm looking for in there. Last, I'll search this board for an answer. Believe me when I say I do appreciate your frustration with the docs. What really kills me is when I know I've read something, somewhere, about what I'm trying to accomplish and still can't find it.

            Now, for your question about the button. I'd just get rid of the check box altogether and instead use a button in the grid to do the delete. In the button's onclick event, choose text mode and put
            Code:
            {grid.Object}.deleteRow({Grid.RowNumber});
            as the javascript.
