Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How far can alpha Go

Windows 8 is already out, beta i think? Will Alpha five still be compatible with the new release of Windows?

Since they have been around since DOS days and have supported every OS since, why would you think it would not be supported?

I believe they are coming up on their 30th year, probably around longer than many of their customers.

Question maybe is rather how far would Microsoft go if they messed with standard APIs and registries and whodnod with a new release of Windows. Every programmer of existing software would be in the same poo.

Make that the 1980's. I bought my first copy in 1989(I think) and it was not the first version at all. I think it was alpha 3 and they had something else before that.

Dave, Seems like I got my first copy in 1988 (v3). I can remember they had help files available by fax. You called a number, enter the help file nbr and it would be faxed. Later, I think this was Alpha, they had their first forum on Compuserve. Getting to old to remember that far back, this forum only list members join date back to 2000, but there are some that have been on here for many years before that.

Everytime you open Alpha it is right there on the Copyright notice, hence the 30th year comment above. 30 years is a great run and it looks like there is a long way to go to the end of the road.

When I bought my first copy, it came with 3(I think) books(may have been four. All of their functions were listed, a book on how to, quick start, etc. Maybe it was prior to 1989. I know where I was working when I ordered it out of a magazine. I needed some special reports made from a clipper app(also on dbf) and wanted to make a payroll app. I made the app and sold it to a lot of businesses. Made it too good, because there are a couple people still using it.

                        Those were the days.

WOW! "Hope they updated their payroll tax tables!"

I had Alpha 4 on floppies. Never knew there was anything prior. Alpha 5, Alpha 4, Alpha 3, Alpha 2, Alpha 1, Alpha-Beta and Alpha-Alpha???? (If there's ever an Alpha 6, I bet it will be in 64bit though.)

Seriously, the software keeps growing, and it's already well beyond the point of "giving the casual user nose-bleeds." The downside is, the more powerful it becomes, the more complicated it has become to use. At some point this will become self defeating....

(Unless of course Alpha becomes capable of generating code using something similar to Apple's "Siri!")
~ Imagine a world where you think, Alpha listens, and then writes the code to do whatever you imagine!
