Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Strange Set startup table

    I created a set, and the toplevel table is the product table with four child when i created a form the first table in effect is the first child of product, i want to do a data entry form on the topmost table which is the product table, BTW all the tables are access tables that i created using active links.How do i make the product table to be the default table for data entry?Thanks.

    Base the form on the set instead....you can simply use the Copy To... which is available from the right click menu.

      I made a new set , then based the for on the new set, at first it works fine, the next day i edit to put an alphabet search button, it is again defaulting on the first child table,I want to select the field to be search on the alphabet search button but the field is not available because it is the child table in effect.What could be the cause and probably the solution of this, thank you.

        I want to create a button search and other controls on the existing form but the default is always the first child, i want to select the item description on the button search as the key but it is pointing to another table.

          Post a sample of your database. You are describing a situation that should not happen. It is impossible to tell you how to fix something that we cannot see and have not encountered.

          It may be quite simple to look at what you have and see the problem.

          Please see before posting.

            Thanks stan for the reply. here is a picture of the set and i found out something. After creating several sets and several forms to test why am i experiencing something like that, I found out that if i include the table wholesaleprice and set the relationship as one to many, that is when i experience that the first child is already the parent, so when i display the records on the form, it is only the record on the first child that shows up.
            Here are the structures of the table

            tblProd = table
            ProdCode
            Desc
            CategoryID=fkey
            Dept=fkey
            Brand= foreign key
            SupCode=fkey
            WSIZE=fkey
            etc

            brand=table
            brand = primary
            desc

            dept= table
            dept=primary
            descdept

            brand=table
            brand=primary
            descbrand

            tblCategory
            CategoryID=Primary key
            CatDesc

            etc
            Their is no problem if these are the only tables in the set, but when i include the wholesaleprice table, the default or topmost table in effect becomes the first child in the set

            here is the wholesaleprice table
            ProdCode=foreign = relates to the tblProd
            Price1
            Price2
            etc

                      Try deleting the wholesaleprice table in the set, and it will be okay, I need to include it because i want the user to see and enter additional prices for a certain product.

                        Re: Strange Set startup table

                        I tried creating a set with 2 tables, tblProd and wholesaleprice, I created a form and created individual fields for the tblProd table and a browse for the wholesaleprice and it works simply as it is suppose to be. Now, i added 1 table called tblCategory in the set so that I will be able to view the category name instead of the category ID on the tblProd field that is displayed but then here again that the top most parent table of the set became wholesaleprice, and as expected, i cannot display all records of the tblProd table.Please help. Thanks Much!

                          Jetson,

                          I could not look at your example database, the backend data sources (access tables) are not available to me.

                          You're using active link tables throughout? If so, perhaps someone with active link experience will be able to assist. The behavior you describe does not happen with native DBF tables.

                          I suggest that you mention "active link tables" in all posts here. Otherwise, your readers will assume you are using native DBF tables, because its likely they will miss (like I did) what you said at the very top of this thread. Sorry 'bout that. -- tom

                          PS. If you need to change the set structure try giving the "new" set a different name, and then copy your form layout to the "new" set.

                            I forgot to mention, the database zip called DeGuzman, Pls. unzip to the same folder name as the zip file which is DeGuzman, the access database is included in the zip which is datainv.mdb. I tried your suggestion before,I made several sets trial and error, and one by one i included a table to the set until such time that i discovered that only one table which has a one to many relationship from the topmost or parent table is the one causing the strange behavior of the set, btw all the other tables related to the parent has a one to one relationship.Pls download the database and try including the WHOLESALEPRICE table to the set and, and also, there is no problem if I make a set with the parent table called tblProd and the WHOLESALEPRICE,but the problem is, i want to include 4 tables related to tblProd so that I will display category names,department names, brand etc instead of category ID,department ID and brand ID.Pls. Help.

                              Tom, Did you download the pictures called wrong and correct? I pointed in an arrow the tables in effect if i include the wholesaleprice table. Correct one should be the topmost which is tblProd. not the other which is tblcategory.
