Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Multiple A5 Apps

Is it possible to run (call?) another a5 app from within your current running project?

While running my program, there is a point where I may need to check information from another a5 app (intermediate information/calculation)
then return to the initial program.

Is it possible to keep both running (in background to each other) and pop in and out of each as needed?

For example: Create Purchase order >>>>> check inventory status >>>>> return to purchase order.

The other program was created by someone else, but runs on the same server, uses different data tables.

Is this a "SHELL" function or .............................?

    Thanks.

    Whoa, whoa, whoa.

    check inventory status
Does this mean you want to perform a lookup to a table which is part of another database? If so, just specify the full drive-pathtablename-extension of the external table in the lookup.

    Probably easier to switch, see
    A5.Load()
    There can be only one.

      Hey Stan:

      Thanks.

I will have time to try it over the weekend. It seems simple ... BUT... usually never is :-(

It's more than just a table lookup. Graphics of parts; bin locations, pricing, status reports.

Once its loaded it should give me full access though! Shouldn't it?

        Re: Multiple A5 Apps

        Hi Steve,

Maybe you are missing something here. More than one Alpha Database (proper name for an application) can have and use the same set or table at the same time.

However, if the data really is related, it generally should be in the same Database. If there are multiple functions, just separate them (possibly with security) as sub-"apps" of the main Database, where you just go to different forms etc.

And, to save issues of the way Alpha handles folder paths, it is recommended that all tables and sets be in the same folder. It is sometimes possible to use separate folder using alpha's alias definitions, but it can have issues in use.

For the most part, Alpha stores the Database, Table or Set paths as the folder it is in, or contains the whole physical path if it is not (including subfolders). The reason for this is how A5 evolved, and is probably never going to change.

Additionally, you can have two databases open at the same time and move freely between them. You don't have to close one to open the other.
