Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    O/M/G Error Message

Now I know for certain I will continue to create databses on A4 and
report them (usually) on A5. Can anybody help with this problem? ....

I did create a database on A5 and have been using for a year. It has
worked ok. However, today I tried to update the contents of a character
field and got this error message:

"Data Value Cannot Fit Into a Numeric Field of Size,"

I have updated/replaced information before and it has done fine. But that's
one of the more creative non-sequitors I have seen, especially since this is a
*character* field that is sized plenty big enough to accept two characters.
Moreover, it accepts the new information in one record, but not in any others.

    I have done the following to try an fix it: Made the field longer/shorter; deleted it;
put it back in with another name; rebuilt indexes before and after that; checked
allow edits; added a lookup; deleted the lookup; shut A5 down and restarted it.
    Even rebooted my computer twice.

If anyone can help, I'll appreciate it (and promptly trash my test-drive of A5v11).

This error can occur for several reasons. When you update the character field does it trigger any field rules or recalculation of a calculated field? It could be that a field rule in the table is causing a numeric value to be supplied that can't fit where it needs to go.
    There can be only one.

No, Stan. It is a 2-space field to indicate a size: S, M, L, XL. No calculation. The only field rule that applies is to make it uppercase. However, I will check it again to make certain. Thanks for the reply!

Moreover, it accepts the new information in one record, but not in any others.
This is an almost certain giveaway that something in this record is triggering a calculation that won't fit.

It sure is, but this field is not calcuable.

I re-checked and the only field rule that applies to it is to make it upper case.
I am about to remove that rule and simply make sure I enter upper-case letters in
the first place. I haven't done anything yet, awaiting more knowledgeable insight.

Not just the rule for that field. Check all the calculated fields for the table. When the updated field is changes it is triggering a numeric calculation in another field.
            There can be only one.

              Re: O/M/G Error Message

Problem has been resolved and fields now update and calculate as they should.
I had a number as the first characters in my database name. I re-named it,
at Tom's recommendation, and all the problems went away.

My thanks to *everyone* for your kind assistance. I hope someday I learn
              enough to give back.

To avoid confusion for other readers, let me add that Bill's database name was fine, it was the name of a "table" that began with "2012" that was causing the heartache.

Alpha Five tables are the DBF files in our system. In Alpha Four these same files were called "databases". The terminology changed when Alpha Five came out.

Bill, congratulations for hanging in there and working through a solution. Hang in there. Climbing the learning curve is not much fun, but the results are worth it.
