Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Auto increment fails after import, the next number is out of sequence.

36 tables were imported all had a field called IDno or entryno, defined as character size 5 starting at "00001" or size 6 starting at "000001".
They import correctly and for tables with 73,000 records the last entryno is 73000. or a table with 6 got 115000.
If add a record to any of them, the next number in the 5 group can be 9200 or similar, 73001 and in the 6 number tables is 99999 the next record, not 115001 as expected.
I have pack the db, the individual table and results were had no difference. I have removed the autosequence and put it back, same no difference.

Any advise or solution to this problem?

I can solve the problem by creating an operation to assign a new sequence, by first stoping the autoincrement and then running the resequencing.
    Then turn back the autosequence.

    Is there a better solution?
I have 36 tables to do and I will have to repeat this process 2 more time in the next 2 months.

Mike, are you really importing tables? Or do you mean to say you are appending tables?

Yes, I import them. Then I found that the autosequence is lost.
Here is how I did the process. First I export the data from another program as tab delimited.
Import in Alpha into a new table. Clean the fields and data.
These tables do not have any codes or expressions built in them.
I append from those new table into almost matching blank(no data )existing alpha tables.
These new tables have codes and expressions like autosequence.
In the new tables, the autosequence is lost.

I'm wondering if you need to rebuild the indexes for your tables after the appends?

And... what's the difference in your app for the autoincrement rule, the "resequencing routines" and the "autosequence" routines you mention? You're using terms that haven't been defined for us, and we don't know your app.

I am good at comming with new terms, I am not good at solving all the problems.
1 resequencing, I was referring to a process via an operation to re-asign the id or entry no under update records, assign serial values.
2 autosequencing is the definition of assigning a consecutive no in the tables under field rules.

My routine is, (I think is standard). Under rules, Assign field= auto increment go to data entry tab and select simple default expression, give a "00001",
set deafault at data entry, skip = .t., that is all.
Yes, rebuilding the indexes was done, more than once, no difference.
I was hoping for some inside detail about importing, that will avoid to do no 1 above.

PS: Unrelated, why my speeling option, does not work.
I get a little dialog on the left corner: javascript:void("spell check") and do not spell check.
Actually all above buttons same the same thing void

Mike, when you append records are you trying to actually assign field values to the autoinc fields in your receiving table? Don't think you can do this while the autoinc rule is in place. Instead you simply append records, assigning field values to the OTHER fields in your receiving table, and let the field rule populate the autoinc field.

Yes, I think that is the best way of doing it.
                Thanks.
