Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Repeating rows in browse

I have opened my working v9 app in v11. In a form which contains a browse (to show the people who attend any one class), the browse is behaving strangely.

When I navigate to a class, the browse shows correctly (see attached browse_ok.jpg), with everyone in alphabetical order. If I then select a client (I have selected the last one), this client then overwrites some of the others (see browse_not_ok.jpg). Form ... Refresh Display (F5) does not resolve this, though if I navigate to a different class, and then return to this one, all is OK.

Any thoughts ? It works fine under v9.

For v11, try clicking Ajax enabled in the grid properties (1st one). Make a copy of the grid first because you might mot be able to use in v9 after the save.

      Re: Repeating rows in browse

Thanks for your reply, Peter. Please bear with me - I'm brand new to v11 ... I can't find "Ajax enabled" as an option for the browse. I thought the grid was a Web component ?

(edit) Hold fire ... just trying to recreate it from scratch, and I can't. Perhaps something odd going on using a v9 browse ... I'll try to recreate the browse from scratch in v11, and report back.

My apologies. My head was in web mode not desktop mode.

Pete, can you post a sample database here? The problem you describe rings a faint "bell" with me. I've seen this before... somewhere...

Check the browse properties that parent records only is checked. Also the need to edit and resave a form with an embedded browse created in an early version is necessary in v10 too as I recall

Have you compacted the database under V11? The issue reminds me of an index issue.
              There can be only one.

                Re: Repeating rows in browse

Thanks everyone for showing an interest. I can now duplicate this behaviour:

                I have a set containing 3 tables: tClasses 1-m tClientsInClasses 1-1 tClientNames.
                • tClasses contains classid, venue, day of week
                • tClientsInClasses is a cross-reference table, and contains clientid, classid, and whether the client has paid for this session & next session
                • tClientNames contains clientid and client name

(I need the cross-reference table because while a class generally has many clients, a client can also attend more than one class)

The Classes form shows class details, and has a browse containing the names of clients in that class, and whether they have paid.

Then (this is what seems to cause the strange behaviour), in the Form properties, under Filter/Order, I have set the order of TclientsInClasses (i.e. the browse) to alltrim(Tclientnames->clientname).

I attach a copy of the test database. Open the Classes form, and single-click the ClientName of the sixth record (Fffff). The ClientNames of the first and second records also now display Fffff.

Try the second record. All is well clicking browse records 1 to 5, but from the 6th record onwards, things get progressively worse.

Maybe I'm doing this the wrong way. Any ideas for a workaround would be very welcome - I do like my embedded browses in some sort of order ! If you think it looks like a bug, please say so, and I'll submit a report.

                  Good example, Pete.

You're setting the order in the embedded browse using a field in the "grandchild table". This is problematic because the browse itself is based on a different table, to wit, the "child" table. Your problem goes away if I set the ordering expression for the browse to the clientid field in the child table.

                    Re: Repeating rows in browse

Thanks for having a look at this, Tom. It's just that I would prefer the browse to be in alphabetic order, and after all, it does work in v9 ...

                      Re: Repeating rows in browse

A bit of redundant data in your child table would solve your problem.

Otherwise, it's probably time to submit a formal bug report using the Help menu in Alpha Five. Be sure to include your sample with instructions for them to follow to see the mis-behavior.

I see the same problem using vers 10, so this behavior has been around for a while.

A lot of work was done on the browse in vers 9 and 10. Not so much in vers 11. Who knows maybe they can get this working again. In my own work I prefer to set my display sequences (sort orders) using simple expressions and fields in the current table.

                        Re: Repeating rows in browse

Thanks to all for your input, and thanks Tom for confirming the behaviour.

I submitted a bug report. Within half a day I received a response confirming that it was a bug, and within less than 24 hours of submitting the report I got another email saying that the bug has been fixed, and the fix will be in the next release.

I am amazed by the speed of Alpha's response ! You wouldn't get that sort of service from many other database software suppliers ...

In the meantime, I have sorted out an easy workaround to generate the redundant data as per Tom's suggestion.
