Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Recno starts using alpha letters suddenly instead of numbers

I'm entering inventory items and the first column "recno" automatically increments the new highest number and then I enter the data in the following columns.
Today I'm doing this and I enter the data for 003818 and when I hit enter the next row appears with the recno 003819 automatically as it's supposed to. But then on the next entry I hit enter and instead of getting 003820, there is a single "t" in the column. When I replace it with the right number and try to move on, the number I typed in is replaced with "t." When I hit enter the next row is "U" and hit enter again and the next row is "V" and the next is "W." and I can't replace these with the right number.

I don't know what happened to make it start using single alpha letters instead of the calculated 6 digit number that had been incrementing very nicely but it has!

Can anyone tell me ho9w to get back to my incrementing 6 digit numbers.

    Alpha5 vers.11 on Win 7Pro

    Thanks
    Steve Garman

Re: Recno starts using alpha letters suddenly instead of numbers

If "recno" is a field name in your table, you probably ought to change it and then reindex your table. It's not wise to name table fields with names that match built in functions in Alpha Five.

If "recno" is just an abbreviation you've chosen for this post please re-post with actual field name and explain whether this field is being incremented with a field rule auto-increment sequence, or something else.

Re: Recno starts using alpha letters suddenly instead of numbers

It is the actual field name. I went in to the "design" and looked at field values. The category for that field had somehow changed to "Character" so I changed it back to "numeric" and now itr is fine again.

Thanks for your help. I don't know why it changed mid stream like that but at least I got it back. My numbers had previously been padded by three zeros in front and I lost that, but the single digits is OK and allowed me to keep on working.

Now the file starts at "2" rather than "000002" that it had been. I couldn't see any way to add the pad in front so I just left it the way it changed to. The field is set for 6 digits so that all I'll ever need.

        Steve,

Glad you are up and running again. FYI, integers in fields that are "numeric" data types cannot begin with leading zeros. If you needed them then the data type for the field must be "character".

To try to reinforce Tom's point.

          2 is a number
"2" is a digit (character string)
          "000002" is a character string

You can't pad a number with zeroes, you can pad a character string with "0" or multiples of "0".
          There can be only one.
