Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

What to do BEFORE installing to prevent....Startup_100_Register_Controls error

On installing our application on a server with Windows Server 2003, 2008 and Vista our clients sometimes get the message above. I see LOTS of posts about what to do AFTER this error message appears.

My question is what should our client do BEFORE the install to ensure this message doesn't happen.

    Thanks.

If you are using a server, why install anything but the files for the DB? The full install (runtime files) should only need to be on each workstation

      D.Chiasson,

as Mark said. Those files should only be the app itself in a shared folder on the server. You would typically install the runtime on the workstations.

If you are asking about the work stations, then make sure to install as administrator. The rest should take care of itself, if you are running the runtime(or) installer from alpha.

Re: What to do BEFORE installing to prevent....Startup_100_Register_Controls error

        Thanks.

We have the same exe for a Stand alone PC & the same exe for install on a Server. This included the alpha5 runtime & program files. Course, the workstation.exe has only the alpha5 runtime.

Makes sense though to make a different exe for a standalone & one for the server, removing the alpha5 runtime when installed on the server.

We do not use the installer from Alpha.

I think you are right if I am reading this correctly.

That runtime exe should be unlimited??? so you could have it on a bunch of stations if you needed.

I do hope you shadowed the application on the workstation(s)?

All good comments but nobody has offered any ideas what I need to do to install an Alpha5 runtime on a server using Windows 2003 Server software so I don't get this error which many others have got. I want to prevent this error happening. What does an admin have to do????? Thanks again.

Re: What to do BEFORE installing to prevent....Startup_100_Register_Controls error

I assume you are not going to be there? Then just have the admin install the runtime to whatever folder you wish. Alpha made the runtime and installer. It seems to work very well. There is little way for it to error unless the user has something set wrong in the computer.

There is no way to prevent errors, sometimes. I have win 2003 server and it installs perfectly and always has. A good IT "SHOULD" know how to install as it is simple.

The error you are speaking of is due to some dll's and ocx's not being properly registered. It generally does not happen on server 2003 with the admin doing the install.

No I am not there. We do not use the Alpha installer. The person installing is an experienced "network administrator". I do agree that some files have not been registered but do NOT know what to tell the technie what he is doing wrong.

Logically there should be some things that need to be set / done to have an errorless install on a Server with 2003 server software.

Once the program is installed is to run the appropriate batch file that is included with runtime to register the files. If he runs the correct batch file, the files should register and all should be well. I do this with astrum installer just after the runtime is placed on the computer.

There are 2 of them and one is for win 7. the other includes the following:
****Remind that I have slightly modified them***
                  'File name = RegisterFiles.bat

                  regsvr32 Codejock.PropertyGrid.v11.1.3.ocx /s

Thanks for this. I am unsure what you mean when you say "there are 2 of them" then give a some additional text for "1" of the bat files. Are there 2 different bat files?

You indicate there are within Alpha5 runtime 2 register bat files but your post / Email indicates that all you need is your modified lines above. Would your "modified" bat file work for XP & Vista/Win7? If so, seems like an elegant & simple solution. Much appreciated. Thanks.

To install to vista or win7, the bat file is named: RegisterFilesVistaWin7.bat
You do not run them from within alpha5, you run them from within the runtime folder. Just double click whichever one you need. Alpha supplied them and they are well documented.

Yoyu have alpha installed. Go to the folder and try it yourself.
