Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

A Question about Utilizing Hybrid Apps

Greetings to all my fellow forum members!

I have a major decision to make within the next month or so regarding an app under development. Having developed primarily using the desktop platform, I am intrigued by the features offered by web apps. If you have already incorporated features of the desktop, and the web for a hybrid application, what advice would you suggest in reagrds to how best to utilize what feature to it's greatest advantage?

I am currently using A5V11 both desktop and web additions.

Thanks much in advance for your comments and time.

Re: A Question about Utilizing Hybrid Apps

Usually people choose the web for portability/remote connectivity, or to reduce or eliminate software installation headaches. If you have a shop with, say 15 users, do you really want to go around and install software updates, patches, etc + deal w. issues of shadow updates if you use shadowing or would you rather just have everyone open their browser, typically pre-installed on their machine, and go to town? The advantages of desktop is greater security (maybe? - I do online banking w. little fear), slightly greater speed (although Ajax is almost as fast), easier development (you can drag & drop fields/objects on a form, web requires endless trial & error), and desktop has certain advantages such as direct communication to 3rd party devices such as scanners, etc.

On a large project that I am working on w. another developer, we spent two months see-sawing back & forth between web & desktop and finally chose web (although we will probably still have some desktop in the mix). Why? Because SQL is easier on the web than the desktop with its active/passive link tables and xdialog (shudder, - which allows you to connect directly to SQL, but requires that you hand-code everything). So it's really a question of what it is you are looking for and what you expect to gain by one method or the other. I don't think there is one "fits-all" right answer. Although I will state the obvious: the world is moving more & more to web based & mobile solutions. Maybe there will always be a "desktop model", but I'm not so sure anymore. This technology is endlessly changing, that's for certain.

Re: A Question about Utilizing Hybrid Apps

      Peter,

I honestly believe the desktop as we know it, will be 98% GONE over the next 20 years. Just like dos is 98% gone today and I thought it would be that way some 20 yeatrs ago.

You will see homes and businesses where there is a server(of some type) and their data is at the server accessed from their computers, telephones, pads, etc. Later, these so called servers will be something like community servers, then.....

I don't have all the answers and never did, But I think.

Thinking Example: If a star is 93 million light years from here, then what we are seeing happened 93 million years ago? We are just getting the picture now. Think about this! If something is coming at us at the speed of light, how would we know until after it hit(assuming we are still here...)?..

Not sure I'll be around to care in 20 years Dave, but you are most likely correct.
I suggest that the platforms will be easier to use and systems developed from a type of Lego Kit.
Artificial intelligence may make programming redundant, as the data in the cloud will be available through voice commands.
Alpha offered a Dragon Speech product a while back. Do you know of anyone who ever built an all using just voice?

Peter, which flavour SQL did you go for?

There' going to have to pull of some miracles for this to happen.....

With server connectivity issues, isp & internet service / network issues, dependencies upon a "cloud help-desk" (divine intervention????), security issues, privacy concerns, pricing models and real-time performance speed issues....... Let me scream this at the top of my lungs: You couldn't persuade me to rely on an internet / cloud based POS system for my business.........

I've experienced intermittent issues where our POS software couldn't connect to cr.card processors due to ISP line related issues on the weekends. And that's a big enough threat in itself! I'll believe the desktop will only disappear when two things happen: 1.) All forms of currency become digital, and 2.) Alpha (along with other development platforms) become viable SAAS.

If however, you're referring to lans where the server does all the work (and the browser becomes merely a presentation model): I suppose that is viable. But you're leaving 100% of the hard core processing up to the server, in addition to providing the SQL back-end. Sure seems more efficient to spread out the workload & let the desktop computer "pull it's own share of weight." ~ Otherwise, we've come full circle to having one "smart server/computer" and bunch of "dumb terminals." (just like the 70's and the 80's) ~ I must admit than in this scenario you are left with a single critical point of failure, which IS GOOD, providing you are prepared!

Owning a tablet might give you freedom, but at the same time it offers very little control. ~And it certainly isn't what I'd refer to as "empowering." Consuming entertainment is one thing, but counting the beans is entirely another story..... For the most part, people like to "feel in control." (And smart businessmen aren't comfortable when they're not!)

Sure, the entertainment (digital consumption) is all going the way of the web. But small businesses & business systems - not so much. The only cloud based service I am comfortable with is email. And that's merely due to the convenience. Most importantly, if connectivity isn't 24-7, it's not the end of the world. I'll just "do email" at a later time. Other than that, I don't mind installing GOOD software on a handful of PC's......

One last thing of importance for the OP: If you thoroughly learn the desktop side of a5 first, you've built yourself a solid platform for the web side. And to take the web platform to high levels, you'll have to become a "jack of all trades" because you'll want to become adept at all sorts of additional things like html, AJAX ("behind the scenes"), browser inconsistencies & java-script etc.... ~ IMHO, developing for the web can quickly become a deep rabbit hole!
