Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How do I proceed?

The answer to my problem is probably super-easy (except to me); in April 2008 I bought QReportBuilder, version 8, learned how to use it, created one report and have used that report weekly since then. Have never created another report and never downloaded any updates. Last weekend I clicked on the QRB symbol and instead of it opening I got a message "please wait while QRB copies files to the target folder". I waited a few minutes but nothing happened. I cancelled out and re-opened QRB again - got same message again. This time I proceeded (can't remember what I did to do this) and got the message "The target folder contains the following files which will have to be overwritten in order to create a new database. Are you sure you want to overwrite these files?" I said YES. Eight hours later it was done and it let me into the home page. A new project had been created named "Default" but my old project was no longer there - nor was the single report I have been using for 3+ years.

How should I proceed? Is the old project and my report still there but QRB can't find it or must I start all over again? Between the last time I ran this report successfully (2 weeks ago) and last weekend (unsuccessful) there were no updates, cleanups, or any new downloads or other activity to my computer.

I do have a thumb drive backup (from Oct 2010) of QReportBuilder; it contains a folder "QReportBuilderData" with a sub-folder "ProfilesPC.qrb" (ProfilesPC is the name of the project I've been using to run the report for 3+ years) hopefully my report instructions are contained within this project. So maybe all I have to do is copy this folder from the thumb-drive to the "QreportBuilderData" folder on my hard drive. Then hopefully I won't get that message again that created this situation in the first place.

I am not very computer savvy and therefore get stuck on what to do next quite easily; any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks much,

    Re: How do I proceed?

I suggested to you that you attend the webinar on Thursday (and every Thursday - follow link in the signature below) and that I would walk you through the process.

You should copy the ProfilesPC.qrb folder to the My Documents/QReportBuilderData folder.

Then open QReportBuilder and you project and report should be in place as expected.

Thanks very much, Al - I did as you said and therefore got the missing project back as well as the missing report; ran it this weekend and worked fine.

Any idea why the project and the report got lost in the first place? Also, what should I have done when I got that message (see my original post).

Changing the windows login computer user can do this.

The data is stored in My Documents/QReportBuilderData, so changes to that could be a cause too.

Something changed whether it was done by a process that you didn't think would cause a change, or one of those auto updates, or something....
