Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Are you serious!
In what fantasy island did you write these calculations?
Must have been a long beautiful sunset!

What exactly are you trying to calculate? The odds of winning a horse race or something of that nature?
There are many (not many in alpha) statistical functions to measure the odds of anything. I posted one recently about Standard Normal Distribution. Would that work for you?
When I take a 2 months vacation, I will deleve into your calculations, but on the surface, you are using way too many nestled if statements. You will need to break your expressions into smaller logical blocks and use case() instead.

Re: is it possible to set variables if they are "NOT" on a Form ?

Hi G, basically I have created a fully functional horse race betting system. This is just a snippet.
Everything works well and really fast...apart from just this one form. The system runs on a network and has a live betting show, and a live betting facility.
The calc fields I posted are just the easy calculations, the ones that are on the live screen itself are really complicated. If the form that contains the 28 calc fields didn't work well, I would have to agree with you regarding the if statements. But everything else runs as sweet as a nut.

I will send you the complicated code G when you are laying under that coconut tree during your 2 month vacation, just in case you get bored.

      Cheers mate. Fred

I am sure a coconut will drop on my head and kill me, or maybe just put me out of my misery, before I get done with these calculations.
But seriously, you need to look into stat functions, if not in alpha, you could do an export/import to/from Excel which has much more stats or perhaps other software.
That said, did you win anything at the track?

Looks like too many If statements to me.
The new calcs regarding horse colours could be recursive,
          Other options are
          While and Case/Select

with as many calc fields as you have, you may want to think about a udf or script. a lot easier to maintain and (I believe) faster.

Hi Dave, yes I like the idea of script and as you say, it should work a lot faster.
                Thanks

All I had to say was the same G said with some added explatives-deleted. You can love to type or create code with code, for at least the first part. For this monstrocity I'd chose the latter. I can't test it but it look correct.

                  Code:
                  dim vall as C=""
                  dim vif as C=""
                  dim z1 as C=""
                  dim z2 as C=""
                  dim z3 as C=""
                  dim vtbo as C="Tote_Betting->Odds"
                  dim vLo as C
                  vLo=<<%o%
                  1.13|1.37|5 / 4
                  1.38|1.62|6 / 4
                  1.63|1.87|7 / 4

                  2.38|2.62|5 / 2
                  2.63|2.87|11 / 4
                  3.38|3.62|7 / 2
                  4.38|4.62|9 / 2

Hi Mike...now why didn't I think of doing it like this..Haha.
                    Wow! this looks incredible Mike.
Big thanks for converting it to code and I will certainly try this out.

Hi Mike, well it certainly works ok when I run this code. How do I actually use this script on my form. ?

Thanks to everyone who gave me advice on this, I am most grateful.

The problem has now been resolved. It was indeed as Ted suggested, too many IF statements. I created some real fields and set those to calculated values using variables on another form.
I then removed lots of those IF statements and replaced them with 4 real field values, and now the form open up instantly.

                        Thanks again.

I am curious about how you used Mike's code.
Will you please show us your result?
                          TIA

Hi, Mike's code very cleverly recreated the calc fields that worked out the odds from the relevant fields etc.
On running the script it displayed the 14 calc fields in a text box.

                            Hope this helps.
