Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    how to query a list or a comma delimited list

    Hi all,

    I have a comma delimited list that I would like to be able to copy and paste into a variable field on my form, then run a query to pull the records that are contained in that list, matching a specified field in my table. I have also found the function: comma_to_crlf but I'm not sure if that will even help me.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks!

    Re: how to query a list or a comma delimited list

    You could use INLIST2( Value as C, Comma_Delimited_List as C ) on the original comma delimited list.

    Query filter would be

    INLIST2( somefield, Comma_Delimited_List )

    or using the form object

    INLIST2( somefield, objectname.value )
    There can be only one.

      hi stan,

      thanks for the response. It runs the query but always results in 0 records. I think that is because its looking only at the field -> po_number for the current record and is resulting in .f. I may be completely wrong. I need the variable field (po_list) which is the delimited list to be compared to every record in my table and display the matching PO numbered records specified in the PO_list variable.

        Try this in the interactive in AlphaSports.

        Code:
        clist= "000001,000002,000003"

        tbl = table.open("invoice_items")
        ix = tbl.query_create("N","inlist2(Invoice_Number,"+quote(clist)+")")
        ? ix.records_get()
        = 12

        tbl.close()
        There can be only one.

          it's working fine when I type the list manually. The problem is when I refer it to a variable, or an object. Also, is it possible to have it search for the string (word)? My string has spaces after the comma's and I think that's part of the problem. Here is what my list looks like: 300840957, 300839778, 300839538

          here is what I want it to find in my table's PO field:
          3008409570000
          3008397780000
          3008395380000

          note the trailing characters as well.

            Get rid of the spaces.

            Code:
            clist= "000001             ,             000002,             000003"
            clist = strtran(clist," ","")
            tbl = table.open("invoice_items")
            ix = tbl.query_create("N","inlist2(Invoice_Number,"+quote(clist)+")")
            ? ix.records_get()
            = 12

            tbl.close()

              my query filter: INLIST2(PO_number, List.value)

              PO_list -> my variable where I past all the comma delimited values
              list - > my calculated field values: strtran(po_list," ","")

              Am I doing something wrong here? When trying to run the query I get message "Invalid filter expression"

                Probably. Would have to see a sample database to tell what.

                  It doesn't look to me like you will find a match in the PO field from that list unless you search for a substring.

                    Re: how to query a list or a comma delimited list

                    it seems like I need a hybrid function that allows me to make use of containsi() and inlist2(). It needs to be able to look at only the beginning of each list item, ignoring the 4 zero's at the end. So if 300839538 is typed, it will still find 3008395380000. As well as if 300839778,300839538 is typed it will bring 3008397780000 as well as 3008395380000. There should be something out there for this no, or at least a logical work-around?

                      Nope, just need to tell Alpha what to match. Given a table "a" with a field inv_no with values in the inv_no field 3008397780000 and 3008395380000 (among others).

                      Code:
                      clist= "300839778,300839538"

                      tbl = table.open("a")
                      ix = tbl.query_create("N","inlist2([COLOR="#FF0000"]left([/COLOR]Inv_no[COLOR="#FF0000"],9)[/COLOR],"+quote(clist)+")")
                      ? ix.records_get()
                      = 2
                      tbl.close()

                        this is great Stan, almost perfect.

                        here is the issue. my po_list variable is say... 555, 666, 777
                        I have a calculated field on the form -> "list" = strtran(var->po_list," ","")
                        so list = 555,666,777
                        I'm trying inlist2(left(po_number,9),"+"(List.value)+")") but its returning an invalid query error. How can I work around this? I'm using a variable for the input, a calculated field to remove the spaces (" ") and then the query which is doing the search on the calculated field.

                          ok I figured out this much. This is what I put into my query to run: inlist2(left(po_number,9),strtran(var->po_list," ","")) and it looks like its working so far :)
