Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Is There anyway to find the last field that is not blank & copy that info to current record or evaluate it
    Ex:
    Row 10 field 4, shall check if Row 9 field 4 has data or is blank,if is blank go to Row 8 field 4,if is blank go to Row 7 field 4,if is blank go to Row 6 field 4,and copy data to current record?

        Re: Finding Last Data

        I need to know the table name, the field name and the type (character, numeric, date, ?). Also, when do you want to do this? When the record is saved with the field blank? When you push a button? Something else?

            Re: Finding Last Data

            When you run an update there is no currrent record. This script will find the last non blank field_2, get the contents, and put that value in all the remaining records' field_2. It assumes field_2 is populated in at least the first record.

            Code:
            tbl = table.open("brooklyall")
            tbl.order("recno()")
            tbl.fetch_last()
            if alltrim(tbl.field_2) = ""
            while alltrim(tbl.field_2) = "" .and. (.not. tbl.bof())
            	tbl.fetch_prev()
            end while
            vfield_2 = tbl.field_2
            tbl.fetch_next()
            while .not. tbl.fetch_eof()
            	tbl.change_begin()
            	tbl.tbl.field_2 = field_2
            	tbl.change_end(.T.)
            	tbl.fetch_next()
            end while
            end if
            tbl.close()
            If you only want the value copied to the last record in record number order, we can do that instead with a slight modification.

                  David, did you adapt Stan's example to fit your table and fieldname? Your code not shown.

                    Re: Finding Last Data

                    My bad. I was copying and pasting the table and field name he provided and goofed it up. I think it should be

                    Code:
                    tbl = table.open("brooklyall")
                    tbl.order("recno()")
                    tbl.fetch_last()
                    if alltrim(tbl.field_2) = ""
                    while alltrim(tbl.field_2) = "" .and. (.not. tbl.bof())
                    	tbl.fetch_prev()
                    end while
                    vfield_2 = tbl.field_2
                    tbl.fetch_next()
                    while .not. tbl.fetch_eof()
                    	tbl.change_begin()
                    	[COLOR="#FF0000"]tbl.field_2 = vfield_2[/COLOR]
                    	tbl.change_end(.T.)
                    	tbl.fetch_next()
                    end while
                    end if
                    tbl.close()

                          Re: Finding Last Data

                          David,

                          My script is designed to be run from a button or from the code tab. It opens the brooklyall table, puts it in record number order. The last record in the table is found and the value for field_2 is checked for being blank. If that field is blank in the last record the script backs up to the first record found where the field_2 is not blank. The non blank value in field_2 is copied to a variable.

                          The script moves to the next record which by definition must have a blank field_2. The vfield_2 variable value is put into field_2 in that record, and so on to the end of the table.

                          If that is not what you asked to have done you'll have to be more specific. When posting to this message board you are not charged by the letter or word. This is not the same as placing a classified ad in a newspaper. Spend a little time and say what you mean.

                              David, if writing is difficult for you, why not create a JING screencast and paste the link here, so we can see what you're seeing?

                              Tip: Don't use the word "it" in your posts. Too vague. Ambiguous. Cannot meaning decipher.

                              (This is actually good advice for everyone posting here).
