Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Establishing an SQL database and tables

I am just beginning to try to develop an A5V11 webapp, and want to use an SQL database. Heretofore, when starting a new database using DBF's, the table design was straight forward; using the control panel. I don't find any similar way to create an SQL database. All of the videos which I have viewed start by using an existing SQL file, which I don't have. I am presuming that it is created by some code, but haven't seen the right video (I guess) to know how to do it.
Question One: When starting to develop a web app, do I design the tables first? (as with dbf's)
Question Two: If not, then how do I design and establish the tables?

If this is not clear, this is the best I can do with my present knowledge. Obviously, I need help. Thanks in advance.

you may need to select which sql(My sql, MS sql, etc.) you wish to use first. You can get(usually free) tools online that will aid you greatly in setting your tables up.

This is the desktop section, not the Appplication Server area. You'll get better web help there.

As for SQL, you need an SQL program to build the database, not Alpha. There a several free SQL databases. Try googling.
      There can be only one.

Re: Establishing an SQL database and tables

I am beginning to learn that Alpha does not provide the training regarding how to deal with the fundamentals of SQL, which is OK, really. There is a lot of help on the web; I was just initially thinking that I would find it inside Alpha. I hope to use MySQL, as it seems to be a heavy favorite. I hate to lose the benefit of the "Field Rules" by not using a dbf file system. Oh, well, it is just a matter of learning, learning, learning.

Russ, get yourself a copy of Toad for MySQL
            http://www.quest.com/toad-for-mysql/
It's free and quite easy to use. Runs with Alpha at the same time so you can fiddle with the tables as you develop.

Re: Establishing an SQL database and tables

You should get MySQL and MySQL Workbench before you get Toad for SQL. I recommend getting video "XbasicForWeb" from Alpha Software, as it will walk you through downloading MySQL,MySQL Workbench, Toad for SQL, and setting up a database in MySQL. As well as walking you through converting DBF databases to MySQL, It is well worth the price.

Re: Establishing an SQL database and tables

I haven't done this, but look at video D10

When you create a Dialog component, you will often want to store the data the the user submits in a table. In some cases, when you design the Dialog, you will already have an existing table. However, there may be cases where you design the Dialog first, and only then create the table into which the data will be stored.

These videos show how you can design a Dialog component, and then automatically create one or more tables to match the structure of your Dialog component
                  http://news.alphasoftware.com/v11pre...v11.htm#Dialog

you'll probably need to back track and start with D1, but jump into D10 and see if it talks about setting up the sql tables for you
