Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Error 500 uploading large files via User Defined Upload

Uploading small files works perfectly, but uploading a 15M PDF generates a 500 Internal Server Error.

    Log file:

    0#18 OOhttpdServerClientMIME(ptemp,"AppServerMain")
    0#428 if .not.self.ParseBody()

I do this with PHP (LAMP or IIS) all the time. I don't know where to start to look.

    Any help is appreciated.

Look in the upload settings. There is a default limit on the file size - 1mb? You can change it.

I have it set to unlimited file size (set to zero). I previously had it set to 100M. Doesn't make any sense.

Try a 3mb file or a 5 mb file. work your way up the chain. Maybe it's a bug?

I was able to get an 8M to upload, but a 10M failed. So somewhere inbetween.

What is the elapsed time ( in seconds) from the start of the upload to the error ?

you might need a stop watch.....

Not perfectly scientific, but 1.2 secs. Definitely not enough time for the file to actually be uploaded to the server.

Are all of the test files of the same type?

IE you mentioned PDF.. Are the all PDF, or some text, zip....

Size may not be the only criteria that matters..

I was working through the same problem. I finally changed a setting on the Alpha server config. I set the Request Body on the Performance tab from 60 to 480. I am not sure if 60 was the default, or I set it at some point. 60 means it will drop the connection at 60 seconds during an upload.

Thanks Steve! That was it. I just uploaded a 14.7M PDF. I owe you! I wasted too much time yesterday with this and almost turned IIS & my old VB.net code back on.

Well Steve, I'm sure glad you pointed this out. It's exactly the kind of thing that would drive anyone crazy. You're out 8 $Grand but we're the richer for it. I haven't had any client complaints yet that they couldn't upload a large file, but now I know what to do if they have a problem. Muchos gracias!

Such a JavaScript would create a new Request every 100 seconds and keep a session from expiring, but it would not byp[ass the read timeout.

A client-side script of any type will have no nearing on this, unless it can magically make the file transfer go faster. The Application Server will not read a Request for more than the specified number of seconds, no matter what you do to try to bypass that. As you mentioned, this is a safeguard against a very common DoS attack. But it is very easy to adjust the timeout setting as needed (especially now that you know where it is ), so I don't know why anyone would bother trying any client-side code to address this.

Client-side upload utilities have the ability to do more at the client side, before the upload. Check file type, check file size, select more than one file in a check on/off fashion, resize and rotate images, etc.
