Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Patch Question: Moving A5V7 to Win7 x64

Moving from desktop WinXP Home x32 (9 yrs old) to notebook Win7 Pro X64. Original installation in 2005. I've been using A5v7 strictly as a flat-file db program, with a couple of very simple, basic queries/reports. The .dbf is 20MB. I don't need/use all the advanced features.

I have my original installation files, license key, plus the following four patches:

    a5v7_full_Patch_4130-3033.exe 08/31/2006 21,320,786
    a5v7_full_Patch.exe 06/28/2006 21,152,006 (didn't note the patch #, obviously)
    a5v7_full_Patch_v3960-3018.exe 03/21/2006 18,260,294
    a5v7_full_Patch_v4035_3028.exe 05/16/2006 18,536,195

Will I need to install all the patches in order? Or just the original plus the last patch?

I know there have been some installation issues, but I'm not creating any runtimes or linked dbs or any of the other stuff I don't understand <g>. The .dbf was originally created in the MS-DOS database app Q&A, then into Approach for use in Win95, later XP; the approach conversion turned it into more of a spreadsheet than a .dbf. All of which is probably irrelevant, except it demonstrates my lack of knowledge. Basically, I hammered Alpha5 into submission, making it a flat-file db program.

Anyway, based on what I've read elsewhere, I intend to install into a partition other than C: (F:\Programs\Alpha5).

I'm hoping my only issue here is which patches to install: just the last one, or all?

    Thanks in advance,

    George

which patches to install: just the last one, or all?
Any other issues aside, you only need to install the latest patch you intend to use.
    There can be only one.

Thank you. I'll cross my fingers now and go try to install...

If anyone cares: the program installed fine, but it won't let me activate online. I just sent a message to AlphaSoftware, we'll see.

Unfortunately I can no longer see: the program on the new machine runs *blindingly* fast. I'm spoiled, hopefully I can keep using it.

          What does that mean?

You get a message that you don't have enough licenses? You don't see the activation screen? The activation screen appears but never responds that the activaton was successful? Something else?

When I click Help -> Activate -> Request license key, I keep getting the following error message:

            Script:UI_DLG_BOX:Activation Result line:8
            H.object.Refresh()
            Property not found
            H.object.Refresh method not found

I sent the above via the AlphaSoftware "contact us" webform yesterday, but I'm not hopeful.

License shouldn't be a problem, I'm a single user, attempting to retire my desktop and move to a new notebook. I'd like to be able to keep the desktop going until I know the notebook is ok. My wife, the only other computer user in this household, knows less about using a program such as this than I do. I'm using this as a local desktop flat-file db manager and have no need for additional licenses. (The Help -> About box shows 1 user licensed, no mention of nbr. of computers.)

I'll probably just keep the desktop going for as long as I can, but I admit that after running A5 on the new machine I'm spoiled.

The WinXP d/l for Win7 Pro may solve the problem, but that isn't an option at this time as it's a 500MB d/l on a slow sometimes flaky connection.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated, but I think my options are limited for now.

the slow flaky connection may be the problem with activating online.

I believe you are allowed 2 installs of v7 from alpha, one for your desktop and one for the laptop.

One thing I did with v7 was to install it on the c drive andf not under program files, then run it in compatibility mode for winxp.

              Hope that helps you.

Apologies for the slow reply. I've been away for a while, I'll have to look into why I'm not receiving emails about forum messages.

I'll give this a try in the near future. I'm one of those strange people who like to keep applications on a separate drive from the system, but it's looking more-and-more like Win7 is going to defeat me here. This sounds like something that might work, so I may have to concede defeat and give this a try.

                Thank you.

I have v7 working on a win7 64 bit machine. Install it in someting like "c:\alpha5v7" and it should go(same if you add runtime but add a r or something)). I won't guarantee everything will work on win7 64bit, but all of what I use works fine.

Thanks for insight. I have a very basic/simple setup, so maybe this will work. I'll give it a try as soon as I can, with fingers crossed, of course.
