Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Confirm fact about after shadow install

Is the db created by a "Create Install package" after installed, identical to the original DB?

To clarify, Is the folder created, the same as the original, like all the files and data?

If it is so, you could make a change to the new installed db, just like if you were in the original?
Then of course, you will have to make the same change in your original, increase the serial # in both to the same #, so the users of the shadow Db will get updated.

The reason for asking, is in some cases, all you need to change is an spelling or adding a small report or one field.
Then you do not have to import the installed db, make the change, create an install, send the new install and execute the new exe.
    phew.....

Ron, you are on the edge of the pond.
Changing a Form for splleng reasons, and adding a new reports is fairly easy.
Don't send the DBF files. If you do you will fall in, overwrite data and become the enemy.

If you change a Table however, that's more complex.
Search the Forum for threads on this as it can get awkward. By no means impossible, but if you are not on site, a fair amount of planning will help.

Mr Giles, thanks for responding. Are you saying that the DB after is installed from a "Create Install package" is different than the DB I am using for development?

Assume that I lost the folder/data in my developing computer, I can copy the folder from the installed Db back to my PC and continue to develop as nothing happened. Correct?

Yes, the database application you created using the InstallMaker could be used to replicate the folders if your dev setup went walkabout.
There are a few things to think about when creating install packages.
Experience has taught me that I need a number of versions before I actually launch anything.
The folders I typically use are
.. Dev as it says, all ideas and screw ups. Each time, before I start changing things, I zip the current database and date it. In the database I have a Table where I record what I have done, and add ideas to be implemented. This serves as a Release Notes builder.
.. Testing - a working copy with tests scripts and planned test criteria
.. Pre Production - Fully tested and operational. The latest version can also be used for regression testing. This is what I would use to build a distributable app. Each will have a release number which matches the Deployed copy.
.. Deployed. These are each of the deployed builds created using the InstallMaker.
Of course you will have backups Mr Carver, will you not?

Seriously, if you are going to be distributing apps Ron, a sound structure will save your sanity later. Things always go wrong. Might not be you, might be the pooh fairy.

          All true!

Yes, I have Db backup, many, many.

I belive a name Gibson, comes to mind.

As he said: There 2 kinds of people in this world, those that have lost data and those that are about to.

But my question was to ratify if there was a difference.

The idea was as I explained at first, is not to have to work so hard in updating a DB in the field.
I could have a license copy on the network of the user and using something like PCanywhere, login, make the changes I need plus the number of the network optimization. Let the user self update. Done.
I am thinking in emergency cases, where I am not at the office and away from home. Then later copy that DB back to my PC.

          Thanks for the confirmation.
