Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Fixed column width problem with scrolling grid

    I don't know if the latest update broke something, but now I'm seeing the following problem:

    I want to have a grid that scrolls "endlessly." This means using fixed column widths and a setting a high number for rows of data. I start out by setting the default width for all columns at 0.7 inches. When the grid displays, the first column on the grid is much narrower than the rest, no matter what I do. I move columns around, and every time the first column comes out narrow, while the rest of them are fine. This worked fine with the late February release, but the March release appears to have created this problem.

    Here's the property sheet:

    Here's the resulting grid:

    Workaround! I created a calculated field FirstRow="". Then I put it in the grid as the first row without a label. If you can't beat them, cheat them!

      Continued: I set the description row to Label type, set its width in "Column widths" -property to 1.7in;, also set it's inline style to "width: 1.7in;" for good measure, and this is what I get (it looks like my 1.7in width for Description gets "pushed" down to the next column somehow):

        Pertti - I don't think the # of rows has anything to do with it
        I created a sample of the problem with NorthWind and am sending it to A5

          Thanks, Marion. Something is seriously broken here now. I hope A5 will fix it ASAP. Ah, I knew I shouldn't have jumped into the latest update before dust settles.

            quick response from A5:

            This is a known condition. As stated in the grid builder, scrolling is not intended to be use with updatable grids, unless they have a detail view for editing.

              Re: Fixed column width problem with scrolling grid

              I see. But this changed recently, I'm pretty sure. I was able to put in a large number of max rows and keep the scrolling going in updatable grid. If I changed the max rows to unlimited (0) then the system would tell me that the grid has now become read-only. Now my carefully crafted "legacy" grids (as of January 2012 update) look pretty bad, and I need to rework them all. Pain.

                I do this all the time and do not have the issues you do, Try by stop using the 100% in the setting, set it to the actual pixels of the view pane. Set your update settings to single row. I also (from-time-to-time) turn off the fixed column with and ignore the advice to turn it on as it does not suit me or the app. Good luck.

                  according to the embedded tips, the expectation is that editable grids do not scroll

                    Peter -- Thanks for the tip. I'll try that.

                    Marion -- I hadn't noticed that before. Maybe the earlier version was broken in a way that allowed me to do this, and now the newer version "fixed" it.

                      You can either believe what that says or try it, mine work fine.

                          Re: Fixed column width problem with scrolling grid

                          I just checked a grid I had built with the previous version, and sure enough, exactly the same settings that work fine with that version do not work with the new version. If I don't compile the old grid, it runs fine with the new version. As soon as I compile the grid with the newer version, without any changes, the display goes wonky. Messing with the width/fixed column checkbox/etc. doesn't give me the results I would like. I'm moving on, getting rid of the scrolling window for now and reverting back to the much clunkier web grid way of cutting the grid into pieces (vertically.)

                            Here is your workaround. See attachment and how to Video.

                            Note: in the video you will see this table.. forgot to explain it.

                            <table width="580" border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" background="" >
                            <tr>
                            <td style="" width=50></td> - this is a padding field to allow for the edit icons.
                            <td background="" width=60>{CustomerID}</td>
                            <td background="" width=250> &nbsp;{CompanyName}</td>
                            <td background="" width=200> &nbsp;{ContactName}</td>
                            </tr>
                            </table>
