Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Base a Grid on native Mysql select statement

I have a Select statement that works in Workbench and wanting to create a Grid on that Select statement. When I try to do so and execute the Query in the SQL genie, I get the attached error message although the result set show in the bottom part is correct.
    Any help would much appreciated.

PS: I know I can create a View in the backend and base the grid on the View but I need later to use Arguments to filter the aggregate part. So I really need the base the grid on the original Select statement.

      Hi Frank:
Please take a look at the pic, the select statement is in the SQL box. When I click on Execute Query Alpha returns the right record set but with an error box as shown in the pic. Your help will be highly appreciated.

Not an expert here, but are you using the native SQL syntax?

Using Native MySQL. The Select statement works in Workbench, wondering if Alpha accepts subquerries.

            Gaby,

Try building the query using Alpha's builder. Don't just copy & paste. If you can't do it in the builder, you may have to use a stored procedure.

              Hi Peter:
I had ried the Alpha builder with no luck, I suspect Alpha SQL Genie and subquerries don't get along well. I think I'll head the Stored Procedure route as you suggested... really wanted to keep it simple. Thanks for the idea.

Re: Base a Grid on native Mysql select statement

Yes I see now. I couldn't see that on my phone.
I have never tried using a sub-query like that I would do that with joins and group by. Everything I have built in navicat including using sub- queries and pasted in the SQL genie works OK. I will experiment with a select statement like what you have if that does work it is definitely simpler.

Re: Base a Grid on native Mysql select statement

This worries me that Alpha can't deal with Sub Queries. OMG! If we are forced to use Stored Procedures every time when we would normally use a sub query then you are then forced to manage all row count stuff etc. it is a messy path. See http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...red+Procedures

I know I don't understand things and may be underestimating the complexity of interfacing to Database Servers... but Shish! I would have thought if a query works on say MySQL then it should work through Alpha Five. I don't get it. Either they interface to the Database Servers or they don't.
If they realize they can't keep up using their own database engine, as they have, and thus now direct us to use MySQL and MS-SQL then they should fully support the MS-SQL and MySQL server syntax’s.
In this case I would rather have the option of using Windows ODBC connections.
For example in Access if I run a Pass Thru query (Which is in SQL Server syntax query that runs on the server not locally) I can run a Stored Procedure and get the results the same as a normal SELECT query, I can use Sub Queries, ets etc... None of the problems that I am now facing with Alpha Five.
I love Alpha Five but I am getting more concerned with all these issues with using SQL Servers.

Re: Base a Grid on native Mysql select statement

I tried that statement in navicat and it works although it is about 10 times slower than using joins and group by. I get the same message as you in Alpha. You could accomplish what you want like I do which works well. Create a view with the sub-query sum the amount field and group on and order by the pk. Then in alpha build a join statement from the original table joined to the view by the pk. Set the view to read only. and you have access to all of your records and editing the records is no problem and when you refresh the totals are updated. It's very fast.

                      Hi Frank:
Thanks for taking the time to look into this. I read somewhere that Joins were faster than subquerries but never had the opportunity to see the difference; my dbs are tiny. Just curious to know how many records are in your tables when you experienced the 10x speed difference.
I reworked the entire select statement to use a Left Join, seems to work. I am going next to build a View first as you suggested and a Join in Alpha and see how it goes. Thanks again.

Re: Base a Grid on native Mysql select statement

the table has about 8000 records and the sub-query returned about 400.
