Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Classic Drill-Down Reports scenario

    Hi all
I would like to provide drill-down reports to my customer, as follows:
    - Main Report is a Customer Summary report. User select date range and i'll show a summary of orders grouped by customer.
    - The other report is a report for a specific Customer for the date range.

In the first report, i would like to have the Customer name as link, and clicking on it will drill-down and run the 2nd report, specific for the clicked customer name.

I am thinking of building the whole thing in some dialog, but seems like quite a pain...
How do you guys do that?

    Jaime

    Re: Classic Drill-Down Reports scenario

have you used either of these features in the grid component?
-Row Expander (I sometimes like this and sometimes I don't; depends on how much data and how things line up)

-make a field into a link, and add ActionJavascript to open a linked grid, set as a Window.DropDown; I like the look of this sometimes, but, if you have it set from Parent.Child.GrandChildren, then the Child grid disappears when you look at the grandkids....

    So, currently I have:
ParentGrid has a row Expander to get to the Children
Childtable has a drop down to get to the grandkids

Jaime - is this for viewing info or data entry or both?

      Re: Classic Drill-Down Reports scenario

      Hi Marion
I'm just playing with the Row Expander for the last hour. Here is what i am doing:
      - scenario is classic customer / orders.
Main Grid contains the summary (sql group by clause) i.e fields are : CustomerName, CustomerID, OrdersCount, TotalPax, TotalCharge. I am adding a button for each row "Print Customer Report".
Then, expanding the row for the specific customer will show the order list for that customer. I'm not there yet but i guess i'll have to see how it looks like in case of for instance 100 orders for a specific customer.
All this applies for a specific date range, which i'm setting now as the arguments for the sql, but then i'll add a "search part" in which i'd like the default date range already loaded, i'll see how to tie this to the sql when i'll arrive to that bridge :-)
At the bottom toolbar, i'll add an Action button to print the report for the main grid - the customer summary...
Luckily, it's all for viewing/printing data...

Do you need to drill down to a 3rd tier?
To see the details per Order?

I guess so, but luckily, the Order itself is a dialog, so in the order listing that gets expanded for each customer, i can make the OrderID into a link with action scripting to just open the respective order using it's dialog...

and you'll open the dialog as a popup window?

(I'm looking for ideas on how to handle my stuff)

              Re: Classic Drill-Down Reports scenario

Exactly. In the beginning i wrote the orders handling with a grid ( with DV ) but moving this to a read-only grid that pops up the Order entry as a dialog gave me much flexibility particularly in the dialog. Since the Order entry screen is big enough to span on a very big part of the screen, it doesn't matter if it pops modal or modeless.
Now i really don't mind taking that route ( i.e handling everything with grids instead of drill-down reports ), since this will give me ideas for a Dashboard i have to write for another application, and also this route gives much more flexibility with what you can do.
Still, building the basic model as specified above is a snap in A5, it's just a matter of building correctly the query string and then the grids are ready in minutes, so testing/playing doesn't cost me many hours :-)
