Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

need help using the wiki onlne help

    hello,

i don't know what i'm doing wrong, but i can't find topics that i am looking for. for example, i want to read more about the size to fit option on the forms object menu. i searched for size to fit and object menu, but neither returned any page that explained the option. i'm hoping someone can tell me how to use the wiki to find things.

    thank you

I doubt that option is covered in the wikd. What sort of question do you have? You select an object, right click, and choose Size to fit. If you don't care for the result you can undo.
    There can be only one.

      hello,

the size to fit was just the last thing that i was trying to get more information on.
i recently tried to find information on the add table/set feature. after testing the feature i realized that a copy of the table wasn't actually added to the current database, more like a link is created to the table.

what i wanted to know was if there are any pitfalls to use the add feature instead of importing the data from the external table.

hopefully this is a better example of one of the types of things that i am looking for in a help file.

Use "Add" table to include a table that already exists in your database structure. It does not create a new table, Alpha just creates a pointer that "links" the existing table into the structure, just as you say. There is one big pitfall here. If the table you are "Adding" is located in a directory that's different from the database directory itself it will work just fine UNTIL you try to move the database to a different machine. The pointer to the "external" table is hard coded to the physical path where the external table is located on disk. When you move to a different machine its VERY unlikely the path structures will match there. To overcome this, and keep your database "portable" put all your tables in the database directory. This will work even if the directory name or the machine changes.

update - since i posted the message above, i have installed the updates and am now using the documentation viewer.

one topic that i was trying to find more information on is the "convert library to file system dictionary" option on the control panels, code tab. the option is on the shortcut menu when you right-click on a blank space on the tab.

i hope this clarifies what i am trying to find more information about.

Hi fellow noviceuser - if you look up Library in the Documentation Viewer I think you may find what you are looking for under Attaching a Library or perhaps under the Expression Library - good hunting - Nigel

                    hi stan and nigel,

i read both of your replies, but they don't seem to have anything to do with the part of my message below in red.
can you trace my steps and let me know if the documents that you said to look at are for that dialog box?

                    thank you

So when you convert your code to a filesystem dictionary - how do you get it back? It allowed me to put the library in a subdirectory, but looks to "current database" and will not allow me to select that directory! Now that the code tab is empty - there is no prompt except to convert it again... I should know better than to try things that have so little help available. I am hoping someone knows the xbasic to convert these binary files back?

Yes I have a backup, but that is not the point.

It puts the code in an .aex file that should be the same name as the adb file. That should be in the same folder and read by the adb. Sometimes people have the option turned of. You won't see the code, but all scripts, functions and other are available.

In the code section at the bottom(somewhere) is a utility to convert to aex and then convert it back. I used it with version 7 a couple times.

Sorry Dave, but you are referring to the option to compile scripts into an aex - this menu item removes all the code tab elements, menus, toolbars, etc, and puts them into a format that apparently only Alpha can bring back in.

In which case, there should be an xbasic function that will do the same as the genie...

Once converted you can restore it by right clicking on the empty code tab and selecting the option convert file system dictionary into library

The wiki suggests if you rebuild the AEX it will use the file system dictionary if available so not necessary to convert back.
