Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Pre-release build with new Documentation Viewer is now available for your testing.

This morning's pre-release build has the new documentation viewer in it, should you wish to start using it now in advance of the next update.

Please let us know what you think of it. Thanks.

Ken, I think they could still query the msg database for results. Then have it link to the current board in a browser or built-in browser. I'm being greedy wanting it all in one place. Ha.

Re: Heads Up on New Feature Planned for Next Update

Very very nice. I think I am really going to like the ability to add my own notes.
However, there are a couple of things I have run into in the past when trying to navigate the help system. I wonder if there is a plan for the new help index system to address these issues:

                1) When trying to find the programming commands to do something in xbasic or javascript I have trouble filtering the results by programming language or I have trouble using the correct terminology for the language I want, Xbasic or Javascript. For example, do a help search on "string functions". Only "String Functions Core.JS" comes up. Try the search with "character functions" and you get the xbasic stuff. I never figured out why I could never find the xbasic "character" functions until just now; I was using the wrong term for that language!

                2) A lot of times when I find what I'm looking for I get to the end of the topic and will see a note like "Desktop Only". When I am developing in a web project then I don't care to see "Desktop Only" documentation. Unless, perhaps these "Desktop Only" notations are just old information and do not apply anymore?

                3) When methods, procedures, properties etc. get deprecated or removed from the A5 system completely, I wonder if there is a way for the documentation indexing system to hide those topics from me?

Re: Heads Up on New Feature Planned for Next Update

It would be helpful in the new search feature of the documentation viewer if you could do a search that included words as an exact phrase, topics that included all of the words but not necessarily adjacent to each other or topics that included any of the words. That way a search for say String .and. functions would have returned a link to Character Functions page since one of the lines there is: "Functions to change the case character strings." I think building in a more generic search capability will make the document viewer even more useful than it's already about to be. My suggestion - add AND/OR operators for the filter/full text search while assuming exact phrase searches if no operators are used. Also, including check boxes as Rich stipulated above to limit searches to a specific language or specific platforms (web/desktop) as well as current language only versus deprecated functions would be helpful.

Thanks Selwyn and A5 for continually updating and listening to your customer base. It's refreshing in this day and age!

BUG FOUND IN THIS NEW DOCUMENTATION FEATURE:
(with documentation set to use .dbf's to store search results)

If you save a current list of open topics and use an existing name:
You're asked if you want to over-write the existing name.
When you select yes, the new list is NOT SAVED. Instead, you are left with two instances of the same named (old) list.

                    ~Bug has been submitted.
(These two instances contain identical lists from the old list that should have been over-written.)

Seems like some nice improvements. A few questions:

                        1) Is there any new content or is this just a better method of searching what is already in the wiki?

                        2) Do the results include links to videos that are on target for the search terms or topic? Or do we use this for text and separately use the Video finder if looking for videos?

                        3) Do the results include links to message board threads that are on target?

                        4) How does this get around the problems of the current wiki search which when doing full text searching defaults to OR condition for the terms?
Do we have to specify " " in front of multiple terms to make the search be AND for the terms?
How do I search for an exact phrase?

Fabulous. This truly is a great feature! Also I noticed one other anomaly/omission:

There is no easy way to combine two lists into one list.
When you load one set of lists, it unloads all presently loaded tabs.
Hence, the only way to combine lists is:

Add all items from one list into favorites
                          Load the other list
Double click each favorite to add it to the open tabs list
Save (re-save) this set of tabs.

                          What I'm getting at is:
Unless you already have the list open before you open a tab, it is very difficult to add (merge) the new topic(s) to an existing list.
(If it were possible to drag topics from one list to another list, this wouldn't matter.)

PS: Where should we be sending our "omissions/missing items report?"

Thus far I've found the following:
                          • A5_open_EmbeddedBrowse_CompanionForm() function
                          • Form.viewlinked() object method
                          • Field.data() object method

This is my take on it.

The latter but new stuff will be added as it's ready.

                            2) Do the results include links to videos that are on target for the search terms or topic? Or do we use this for text and separately use the Video finder if looking for videos?
From what I've seen, ther are no links to the videos. I hope I'm wrong on this but it would be very useful and a time saver.

                            3) Do the results include links to message board threads that are on target?
I doubt that it would because there are way to many variables in the text on the message board.

                            4) How does this get around the problems of the current wiki search which when doing full text searching defaults to OR condition for the terms?

My experience is added to your quote above (in bold blue.)

There does not appear to be any OR or AND advanced searching capabilities, other than wildcard. if you key in "function" you get all functions returned.

HOWEVER: Searches like the following do work (providing you enter the words in the correct order: looku* ?unction -> returns wildcard results as shown in picture below....

Overall, 1000% better than the wiki.... (IMHO)

I picked up a used Acer One 10", less than a year old. Is it possible to put the new Wiki documentation on it? That way I won't have to play hide and go seek between the documentation and A5. I already have A5 on two computers so putting A5 on it is not an option.
