Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Append Problem

    Hi all

    I have a problem of copy/append.

I have created a copy operation which copies my record and seems to work fine but when I try to create the append operation in the append card it only shows me the first 26 fields of the append. Is there a reason for this or am I just being stupid as usual and missing something?

    Thanks

    John

Can you provide some more details?

A copy operation doesn't usually copy just one record ("copies my record").

How is the append related to the copy ("try to create the append operation")?
    There can be only one.

      Hi Stan

I have set up the copy operation that it only copies the selected record eg. assessment number 1234 I then need to send this by email to my assessor on the road who will then append that record into his laptop.

After he has finished with the assessment he will push a button which will copy that record again and email it back to Head office where we will append it back into our system. Hope this makes sense.

I am testing if it will work and have created an copy operation and it is activated by a button on a form which allows the user to select which assessment number to copy. This seems to work fine as it creates files in a designated directory namely "c:/temp files/export assessment.dbf/ddd/ddm/ddx/fpt".

I now need to append this into the laptop, where the application is running stand alone (not connected to the network) it receives the files via email (which works) but I am having difficulty in creating the append operation.

Not sure I know what you mean by "how is the append related to the copy"

Any help or advice will be appreciated

      Thanks

      John

the Append Operation card will only show you the fields which have the same name in both tables

but you can click on the arrow to select the other fields and you will need to match them manually to the correct field

I wasn't clear on what you were doing so I had no idea what the append operation had to do with the copy operation. Now that you have explained I understand.

The append genie should "suggest" mapping fields, with the same names, in the "from" table to the "to" table. I would verify that the remote user's table has the same structure.
          There can be only one.

Thats just the thing is dose not show all the fields it only shows the first 26, I have tried making the operation with the genie and normal create but I only get the first 26 fields?

The remote users table is a direct copy of the original application (I copied directly from the server to the laptop)

            Thanks

                John,

As pointed out before there can be a difference between what fields first appear on their own and what appears upon pressing the arrow of a new slot in the "Fields" column. Are you pressing that arrow when you say that you only see the first 26 fields?

If the drop-down list produced by pressing the arrow only shows 26 fields, look closely at the Master table, path and all. Verify that the Master table referenced does indeed have more than 26 fields.

Have just been having another look at it and it seems that it is only copying the first 26 fields and that is why the append is only seeing 26 fields, is there a limit to the amoun t of fields that can be copied?

                  Thanks

                    Hello all

First let me tell you what I think the problem I was having was. Everytime I was testing the copy operation I was using the button on my form which for some reason was the problem once I tested it without using the button it worked fine.

I am now at the stage where I get a successful copy operation (copies all fields) and am again trying to append into the database, I have created the append operation and it works fine when testing it from inside the append card, BUT (always a BUT) when I save the operation and try run it from outside the append card then I get a:
"Memory Corrupt - Terminate operations" message
                    followed by:
"Error Memory corrupt - terminate operations occured while trying to start application" message
                    followed by:
"Object does not support requested interface" Message.

Any ideas why this is happening?

                    Thanks

                    John

Nobody got any ideas to what could be causing this?

John, if you post a working model of your database, with instructions for us to follow in order to see the problem, you'll stand a much better chance of getting the specific help you need. It may also position us to recommend a better approach than your present use of two saved operations in order to enter a single record into a different table.
