Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

      Form calculated fields.

      See this.

      I may have misread your post. It first seemed you were talking about table calculated fields. If you are using table calculated values presently you will need to use the suggested functions to speed up response time.

          Re: Network Performance

          We're talking about the same thing but the question is where you are you when you create these.

          If you open a set in the set editor and use the xy toolbar button you get that editor and the calculations are available when the set is open.

          If you open a table with the Restructure Table menu choice and use the xy toolbar button you get that editor and the calculations are available when the table is open alone or when it is the parent of a set (I think).

          If you open a form in design mode and use the xy toolbar button you get that editor and the calculations are available when the form is open.

          Consider this example using AlphaSports and the interactive window.

          Code:
          cid = "00000019"

          ? lookup("customer","customer_id = "+quote(cid),"lastname")
          = "Jennings            "

          ? lookupc("F",cid,"lastname","customer","Customer_I")
          = "Jennings            "
          The lookupC() is much faster since it uses the Customer_I index. You won't notice it in the interactive window for retrieving one value but if used for a calculated value repeatedly, it makes a difference.
          There can be only one.

            Stan,

            I used it this way "open a form in design mode and use the xy toolbar button"

            Is it right location?

            I will change and use the DBSUM() and Lookupc() instead of tablesum() and Lookup()

            Thank you.

              Stan,

              I had bad experience with Index because whenever I used the pack tables, A5 renamed, and changed my Indexes so It created another headache.

              How can I lock my Index?

                Re: Network Performance

                You can't lock an index. I've never had Alpha rename or change an index so I can't advise you how to avoid it.

                I would strongly advise you to try indexes again. If you are using a lookupC() or similar you can try adding some error checking.

                AlphaSports, this works.

                Code:
                on error goto error_handler
                cid = "00000019"
                rslt = lookupc("F",cid,"lastname","customer","Customer_i")
                ui_msg_box("",""+rslt)
                end
                error_handler:
                    err = error_code_get()
                    msg = error_text_get(err)
                    ui_msg_box("Error", msg)
                end
                This displays a message saying that the index is missing. I changed the name in the lookupC() to simulate what would happen if Alpha renamed the index or removed it.

                Code:
                on error goto error_handler
                cid = "00000019"
                rslt = lookupc("F",cid,"lastname","customer","Customer_[COLOR="red"]X[/COLOR]")
                ui_msg_box("",""+rslt)
                end
                error_handler:
                    err = error_code_get()
                    msg = error_text_get(err)
                    ui_msg_box("Error", msg)
                end
                You could also run INDEXES_MATCH_DEFSTRING() frequently to try to track down the issue.

                  Keep the index name at 10 characters or less.

                        My Shadow application is too slow to refresh
                        This would mostly point to a network issue. IE bad card, switch, wireless, someting, etc

                        "refresh shadow" is mostly a copy operation across your lan.

                            You can also put the results in a file...

                            profiler_end(a5.Get_Path()+chr(92)+"tt_profiler.txt")

                            This puts the results in a file name tt_profiler.txt in the database directory ( if not shadowed..)

                            Not sure why the trace window isn't working.
