Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    AlphaWorks or Electric Desk

Does anyone have copies of these two titles?

My dad who just passed away kept all of his finances in the *.ss format and we can not find the software to be able to read, print out, and give this information to the accountants after his passing.

Any help would be tremendously appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Brian Doherty

I just checked the box of Alphaworks that we have here, but it is empty. Good luck with your search.

          RE: AlphaWorks or Electric Desk

Yes he did and sent me a copy of Lotus Works which does not work with the *.ss file format...

Guess the software has to be either Electric Desk or AlphaWorks.

Gosh it's fun to remember back to those days and how blown away by that software at the time (back in the days of Dos) as being the coolest thing I'd ever seen in my life.

Well, if you hear of anyone with a copy of either of those titles please let me know and thanks for your efforts,

          Best for now,
          Brian

            Hi Brian,

Did you ever find a copy of Electric Desk? My dad still has his original disks, if you want, next time I'm home I'll get you a copy. I'm in the process of looking for a program to convert all his files to a more modern format, he's still booting up the old 8088 when he wants to check something he's saved.

              Brian,
Having used Alphaworks, then Lotusworks, the only difference I was aware of was the name and the number of disks it arrived in.
*.ss files must be for Electric Desk.
Actually, if someone has a copy of LotusWorks I would be extremely grateful

                  Brian,
If you still need access to Electric Desk I can provide help.

I've been a user almost since day 1 - now many years later, I still use the spreadsheet portion of Electric Desk for quick, dirty, and easy spreadsheets. It is a handy tool.

                  I graduated to Alpha4 Version 6 which I still run under OS/2.

Now readers can identify me as a dinosaur - which I might be. But darned if it isn't nice to have things work correctly the very first time.

BTW I am looking for a copy of the HELP files that go with Electric Desk. Somewhere along the conversion road I lost that disk.

                  Thanks,
                  Dave

I have the program files for Alphaworks and could send them to you if it would be helpful, or if you want. I am looking for the original instruction manuals that came with the program so that I could modify the one I am using. I can't remember how to modify the macros, etc.
