Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Refreshing a Grid from List control selection

    I'm using tabbed UI to contain a grid section in one tab, and in a different tab a list control.

    The list control shows a list of Employees logged in to work, with a radio button to change the state from logged in to logged out. The grid has a dropdown of who is assigned to each order, with employee names populated based on who is currently logged in.

    When each tech is "Logged In" I need the grid, or at least the dropdown in the grid, to be refreshed to show the available choices of employees to assign.

    I've tried the OnSelect method from the list that would refresh the grid, but unsurprisingly that wouldn't work.

    Is there something I can do to change the code so it points to the grid to be refreshed?
    {grid.Object}.refresh();

    Since you already know how to use a list control, why not just create a new list control in the same UX as your log in list control.

    Then you can refresh the second list from the first list very easily.

    You can also setup the grid to auto-refresh every X seconds. So it can constantly show the correct data even if the person logs in on another workstation.

      Re: Refreshing a Grid from List control selection

      I like the way my grid is setup at this point. In particular, the fact it can have dropdowns and checkboxes without switching to a detail view, or having other controls outside the grid makes it better for the project imo. I'll probably end up creating a button above it that can refresh it manually so I can avoid setting a high refresh rate. I was kinda hoping someone would just have some awesome code handy that would refresh a foreign ux from my list control...

        Re: Refreshing a Grid from List control selection

        It IS possible to do.

        If you get the name of the grid using the developer tools, you should be able to refresh it with

        nameofgrid.refresh()

        It's worth a shot anyway!

        You need a manual or automatic refresh anyway, don't you? Because orders can presumably come in through the day and will need to show on the grid.

          I do have a 60 sec refresh already in place. Where are the developer tools? I guess I can't just fill in the blank with my grid name :( or that method hasn't worked so far anyway

            I tried using the div name from Chrome debugger if that's what it is but no go.

              Re: Refreshing a Grid from List control selection

              If I am understanding you right......It sounds like this simply the case of NOT using a cached lookup. The drop-down is a lookup right? Lookups can ALWAYS see fressh data. The UX in the other tab I would assume does a submit when people are logging in and out right? Set the list to auto-submit when moving to the next row.

              If that is the case then as I said the lookup can lookup the data filtered by is logged in. Be careful in that everytime you edit the lookup it will switch back to cached data lookups.

                Re: Refreshing a Grid from List control selection

                No the dropdown is just a dropdown that uses sql statement: "SELECT DISTINCT Tech_name FROM technicians WHERE Tech_status="Logged in" ORDER BY Tech_name ".
                That way it can distinguish who is on the clock, but it isn't refreshed automatically. I don't know how to set it as a cached lookup in the grid..Can you point me in the right direction on that one?

                  I am out of the office at another wildlife conference in san antonio right now so I can't go from memory, maybe someone else can chime in, the idea is that the lookup is fresh, and has been saved back to the db from the list your using.

                    Where are the developer tools?
                    In Chrome, the three dot menu on the upper right corner has an option called:
                    More Tools -> Developer Tools

                    Mr. Google may be of further help using them.

                      In a Grid - in the detail view - for a field using the Lookup option called edit combo, uncheck "Allow Data Caching" this makes for a FRESH lookup to the database. If your list control is submitting the data, then it will be there for the lookup everytime.

                        Thanks Charles, but I don't use detail view for my grid and that option seems to not be available on my field options.

                          Re: Refreshing a Grid from List control selection

                          Here is the exact scenario: (I had a peek at his app.)

                          The grid is an editable grid, done up in rows. The detail section for editing individual rows fully is actually a UX. But on the grid itself, you can change the status of the job and who is assigned to the job right on the grid.

                          What is important to the issue at hand:

                          The grid is embedded in a UX - so the thing that he needs to do is refresh the grid which is an embedded object.

                          That seems like it should be easy to do - but I'm not sure how to do it.

                          Any suggestions knowing more about the setup?

                            Use the web socket option? When the list control login/logout status is toggled/saved send out a message telling any relevant grid/embedded grids to refresh or even better specify only the controls to repopulate.

                              Never used the web socket option, but it's certainly worth looking into! Thanks for the idea.
