Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Can data source be from a DBF table that resides within another project?

In a specific grid (or ux), I would like the data source to be a DBF table that resides on the same server, but in a different folder outside the actual project folder.

So, if the project folder is c:\projfolder but the data I want to access for the grid is in c:\data, how could I do that?

    Gary,
I believe that can be accomplished with a different path alias (default represented by [PathAlias.ADB_Path]\ ), although I have never tried that.

      Hi Jay,

That was my thought too. So I set up in Profiles:

      [PathAlias.AMA_DBF_Data] = c:\mydata

But I am stumped on how I can make the grid use this alias instead of the default: [PathAlias.ADB_Path]

Doesn't the grid source allow you to designate the table from which the data is sourced? If so, did you try [PathAlias.AMA_DBF_Data]\myOtherTable.dbf?
And if that does not work, why not just add the "foreign" table to your existing database?

Yes, tried that and did not work - also tried hard coding the exact path to the table - did not work either

Because the table in question is being used by another application that is based on DBF, and I want to also access that table from the new application that is based on MYSQL.

Interestingly I can easily access that table using Xbasic but I cannot figure out how to do it thorugh a grid or UX.

            Gary,
An option for the list builder is:
Custom, which can use an Xbasic function to return a CR-LF list of values or an array of JSON objects.

Does that help, because you said you can access the table using Xbasic?

              Hi Jay,

Sorry I did not reply sooner. I have been busy with other tasks.

Thanks so much for the suggestion. I will take a look at that. I would prefer a grid though for various reasons but will look in to this further.

                Hi Jay,

Problem solved. I got going in the right direction after email exchange with Selwyn. A BIG thanks to Selwyn for this!!

Turns out that the table MUST be in the current project, BUT you can add a table from any folder outside the project by simply clicking the Green + sign which adds a table or set to the project. Once that is done, everything works as if the table was actually in the same folder as all the other tables of the project..

In my case, I had to do a few extra steps The other project has a password and the tables are encrypted. The table in question does not contain any secure information. Thus the solution was to decrypt that table, move it to a separate folder on the hard drive, and then go to both projects and add/table set (green + sign) that table to each project.

                  Gary,
That is what I suggested in post #4.
Hope to see you at DevCon. It's almost in your back yard.

                    Hi Jay,

I guess I misunderstood what you were saying. I thought you meant to physically move that table to the new project, which would not work for me because I need both projects to be able to access the same table. You actually meant "add" the table via the "add table/set" to the current project. Got it. Thanks so much for the help!
