Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

hi Frank, this isn't our experience. We've had systems go down on a variety of ports including "non standard" ones.

Have you ever configured IIS on any of those same non-standard ports?

There are many reported issues with the latest Windows Updates from last week breaking servers from many vendors, including Microsoft's own IIS. We are continuing to investigate work-arounds, but the only viable option at this time is to uninstall the Windows Updates.

Here is a link to Microsoft's forums where they are discussing the problems. This also includes links to several other discussions of similar problems.

Re: Windows Update Breaks Application Server

I am having same problem but the updates that were installed yesterday on my server that seem to be causing Alpha server to crash are:

                  KB4338418
                  KB4338421
                  KB4338830

I don't see any of the updates listed in this thread in my update log so I am going to try un-installing the three that I listed and see if it fixes the problem.
It has been over 30 minutes since I un-installed and server still has not come back up yet (keeping my fingers crossed).

At first I thought I was lucky ...but turns out I am not.

I'm trying to uninstall some MS updates too but can't seem to find them.

Made a seperate thread here: https://www.alphasoftware.com/alphaf...578#post738578

In case anyone is curious: My app servers stay up and running for a few hours then crash. AlwaysUp can't seem to end the process. I can't end the process via the Task Manager either. So I end up rebooting the server.

My system now seems to be working by removing the updates I listed in my post. It seems strange that Alpha did not put out some emergency notice on this and that I had to read about it in the message board.

It looks like Microsoft has release a new update yesterday that supposedly fixes the bug that they introduced. I have not verified that this fix actually works yet

I can only assume that the silence on the matter is due to their energies being focused on trying to come up with a work-around.

It is a Microsoft bug. Nothing we can do. Microsoft message boards are full of posts about how they have broken IIS. Microsoft has to fix this. Nothing Alpha can do to work around the issue.

Microsoft has made updates available to fix this problem that was introduced by their July updates. These new updates do not yet appear to be getting pushed out through Windows Update for all users, but you can obtain the newest updates directly using the links below. You will need to apply the correct update after re-applying the July 2018 updates if you had previously removed them.

Thanks, Selwyn. It's never fun when Microsoft has one of their mandatory "patch Tuesdays" that breaks as much as it fixes. I'm glad they have acknowledged the problem and have a fix for it.

Obviously all this did have effect for just some servers not all running Alpha. All this time I have had no problems. Virtual Apache CloudStack server IIS not installed.
