Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    List ignoring column definiation

This seems to be my week for Alpha Issues.

I have lists which were working fine that now are ignoring the column settings and are now a mess. All the columns are bunched to the left of the list, and you cannot see the rows at all.

When I go into the list properties and look at the layout table and press the list preview button, it looks as it should.

I have recalculated the list and republished and it's still happening.

    Any suggestions?

I have definitely seen that before a couple of times but don't remember how I fixed it.
Maybe I had the list inside a smaller fixed width container?

Sounds like a JS error some where. Open your browser's developer tools and then load that component. Any errors in the console?

Alpha's running collection of bugs and breaks is very build dependent. You need to always include the build you're using in order to determine if the issue is old and unfixed, old and fixed, or new.

I'm still on build 5028 but I have noticed for awhile now that creating a list control through the "List Control - Quick Setup Genie" seems to cause more problems than just entering the name of the list, hitting "OK" and then configuring the list via the List Builder.

Possibly problems like the one described above (but I don't remember for sure).
Detail view controls not showing up at all (definitely seen that a few times right after building a list with the Quick Setup Genie).

Comparing the xBasic code in the xBasic tab between building a list through the Quick Setup Genie and configuring the same list through the list builder, you'll see parameters that exist in one case and not the other. Don't know if the differences cause the rendering issues that I've seen.

One other interesting difference I discovered recently: when using the List Builder and looking at the "help text" at the bottom of the dialog when selecting "Persist data to Local Storage (or File System)", you'll see the reminder that you must also check the "Restore data in List controls from Local Storage". Normal, although they could probably also check it automatically if the persist data option is checked.
However, when using the Quick Setup Genie and when selecting "Persist data to Local Storage (or File System)", the help text says it will check the "Restore data" options automatically. That is understandable. But it also says it will check the "Persist variable values" option also.
The help text warning for "Persist data to Local Storage (or File System)" in the List Buider doesn't mention anything about persisting or restoring variable values. I'm not even sure what problems it causes if you don't persist and restore the variables in this case. And it seems that you need to pass through the Quick Setup Genie and read carefully to learn about it.

Anyway, just pointing out some differences I've seen in case anyone uses the Quick Setup Genie a lot.

i don't think that is any difference between a list that you create yourself and one that is created by the genie. the genie is just automating the process of setting list properties that you would have done yourself in the builder.

you should send a test case, but a list control that is based on a columnar layout may need to be refreshed if it is hidden and then shown.
to refresh a list do this

var lObj = {dialog.object}.getControl('name of your list')
              lObj.refresh()

for example, if you have a list on an initially hidden pane of a tab control, when the hidden tab comes into view the list is automatically refreshed by code generated by the ux component. if the list had not been refreshed, the columns would not display correctly.
