Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    List server side beforeQueryevent passing in data....

    I want to pass in data to this list event so it can be evaluated to authorize or not authorize the list query to run..

    I have tried setting the following in the dialog initialize event as a test
    e.control.status="ok" -- created a field call status to hold the data
    e.arguments[e.arguments.ArgumentNumber("status")].data = "OK"
    e._state.status = "ok"

    But when the beforeQueryevent runs none of these are available to use in the event. I've looked in the e.object with debug and none are available.

    How do you pass in data to this xbasic event?

    Re: List server side beforeQueryevent passing in data....

    There are a couple (probably more) properties you can use.

    In onDialogInitialize...

    session.status = "not ok"
    e.rtc.status = "maybe ok"

    And in your XBasic function you'll find your properties under...

    Once you're done evaluating, set e.authorized = .t. or .f.

      Re: List server side beforeQueryevent passing in data....

      Hi David,

      I had tried the rtc and session. In all cases when debug(1) runs on the authorize xbasic the variables are not in the e object and it errors out.

      I tried it two different releases of Alpha, including the current release. Is this some thing that works on your end. It's very easy to test, just create the xbasic function and look in the e object.

        Re: List server side beforeQueryevent passing in data....

        Hey Tom,

        This is running ok in Build 5667, the current release 5864, and the current pre-release (I always test code before posting it... hint... hint...(not you Tom)).
        It's not your function name. "authorize" makes me a bit nervous, but it was fine.
        I'm running under the local server, but I can't imagine that makes a difference.

        I can see in your posted image that session.status is not there... but... your code is wrong. You're going after e.tmpl.status... which won't exist. You want e.tmpl.session.status.

        In onDialogInitialize I've got...

        session.status = "not ok"
        e.rtc.status = "maybe ok"
        Have you noticed that the function runs twice? My properties are available both times.

          Re: List server side beforeQueryevent passing in data....

          Hi David,

          Thanks for checking this. I ran it on the same versions you were using with the same result. I took a simple ux with one list control. The attached video shows the process.

          I'm not sure what's going on but I was using this to authorize running a query based on a valid mobile device id from phonegap. I changed now to validating access to the entire UX as a work around. I did notice the function ran twice and one problem was that it seemed to run before the javascript code in the events that set the state variable which also caused an issue so I moved it to the xbasic initialize event. Last attempt I'll try is clearing the browser cache and restarting the PC. Otherwise time to move on..

            Re: List server side beforeQueryevent passing in data....

            Now that I see your UX running I see what's going on. You are pre-rendering your UX... which means that stuff is different during runtime. rtc is one of those things. Turn Pre-rendered off for your UX and test... you'll see everything works.

            The audio in a lot of your video dropped out... do you not want to use session vars? I don't blame you... just checking. They do work. Your video only showed a look at e.rtc.

            You can also use Request Variables from onDialogInialize, if you want to.

            Request.Variables.myStatus = "not ok"
            and then find that property in...

            Still looking at more options

              Re: List server side beforeQueryevent passing in data....

              If you set up an Argument in the List Control, it is also available in your function in e.arguments. However, it's getting it set that's the tricky part. You can set it with session vars or request vars... but you can already set those and use them without going through the List args.

                Re: List server side beforeQueryevent passing in data....

                So turning off pre-render gets me access to session and rtc variables when set in the xbaisic initialize , but not e._state variables. More important, these have to be set in the server side xbasic and not client side javascript. So I don't see how you can pass in something like a device id from phonegap. When testing I usually use the client side onRenderComplete event to set variables I usually would set in Phonegap. When I try that approach here the List authorize event runs before the javascript events and errors out. I never realized the impact of pre-render, now I won't use that as it cost too much time in debugging.

                Thanks for spotting that.

                  Re: List server side beforeQueryevent passing in data....

                  If you can live without pre-render, then you can use State variables. You need to control the order of events.

                  Set your List to "Delay render till explicit refresh". Now you have control over beforeQuery.

                  In onRenderComplete, do whatever you need to for the Device id and use .stateInfo... and then refresh your List Control...

                  {dialog.object}.stateInfo['currDeviceId'] = '4444';
                  Then, when beforeQuery runs you get to use...

                  dim testDeviceId as c
                  testDeviceId = e.rtc.tempE._state.currDeviceId
