Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Save current username to table field on update - Webpage

    Hi all,

    I'm sure some of you have had the same problem as me. I must first excuse, if the solution is somewhere on the forum. I'm new to Alpha Five, so running on the demo and trying to find out if it can help me with my needs for a database solution. I have looked for several days, trying to find out how to update a field in the database automatically with username when the record is changed. Also looked a lot in this forum, but haven't found a solution yet.
    I have two fields in the database "CreatedBy", "ChangedBy". "CreatedBy" is set to user entered in Field Rules on the table, the default value is set to A5WS_GETCURRENTUSER(). So this gets the current user when a new record is created.
    But "ChangedBy" doesn't work, I have tried to set Field Rules to Calculated, and then use the same A5WS_GETCURRENTUSER(), but no luck.

    My next solution would properly be to somehow change the update script for the database, or do some xbasic to change the field from the form window. But I'm pretty lost here, since I don't know how to do xbasic yet.
    I also thought if I could store username/userid in Session and the maybe use this on the database field, but doesn't seem like I'm allowed to use Session variables in database fields.

    Hope some of you can help me with a solution.

    Kind regards David.

    David - if you are using field rules, then you're using DBFs. This is OK, but very often not the optimum solution for a web application -- something I'll suggest you consider right up front.

    I haven't used DBFs for some time and I know Alpha's done some work to make field rules work better with web applications, but I don't think you should depend on them. Find other methods instead.

    You don't say what control/component you're using as an interface. The answer is strongly dependent on that information.

    If you're using a grid, you might remove the field rule, then add the ChangedBy field to the grid. You can Hide the field if you want to.

    Then use the Grid's Server Side event CanUpdateRecord for something like this:

    Code:
    function CanUpdateRecord as v (DataSubmitted as P, Args as p, PageVariables as p, Result as p )
    with PageVariables
    Result.Cancel = .f.
    Result.ErrorHTML = ""
    	DataSubmitted.ChangedBy = a5ws_getcurrentuser()
    end with
    end function
    Again, without a little more information and context, this is a partial shot in the dark, but may move you further along than you've gotten so far.

      Re: Save current username to table field on update - Webpage

      Hi Steve,

      Thank you very much for your reply.

      I'm sorry that I missed all these information's about grid view etc. So here are a little more information.

      Yes I am using DBF, I do want to upscale it to mySQL by time. I just thought that starting on DBF would be easy when I make changes to the database and tables.
      But I can see your point about DBF is not the best database for online system, so I might as well change it now before I get my feet to wet. :-)

      The page that holds the form and the view of the table is made in a Grid component, I then load this Grid component in to a tabbed UI.
      In the Grid component, users need to tab the row they want to edit. The form for editing is then showed to the rightside on the Gridtable. So I'm not using modal window.
      So I have been playing around with how to set the ChangedBy field, after the user submits the data. But just didn't know how to do it right.
      I'll try you script later today, and then get back to you again.

      BTW If I like to have some sort of One-on-One online training or mentoring, is there somewhere I can go for this?

      Kind regards David.

          Hi Steve,

          I moved my tables to mysql and have also tried your solution with CanUpdateRecord, and it worked perfectly.
          Thank you very much for your help. :-)

          Kind regards David.
