Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

installation of the alpha anywhere application server

I have a question pertaining to first the installation of the alpha anywhere application server (WAS?).. is there a documentation on what are the requirements on the machine to install this (WAS)? Could someone give me a link to how to step-by-step on installing this WAS remotely on a client's server ?? once this server is installed, can I remotely publish an web application to the client's WAS as long as I have remote access to their server?..
Thank you in advance for your prompt responses.

Re: Intranet application - application server

as long as you have complete access to client's server that is a windows 2003 and up, you should be able to install the was. You should also be able to publish to the server on completeing/changing the web app.

Install FileZilla FTP server (or some other FTP server) & you can publish from within Alpha to that server, use optimized publishing which works real fast.

Installing remotely: I use Teamviewer HOST on my VPS & I have RDC disabled because all the script kiddies try to get access. In Teamviewer you can easily xfer files (such as the Alpha exex) & do all management of your VPS.

Re: Intranet application - application server

thank you Al, .. I have not done this process yet.. but about to in a few hours.. I will first give this a shot by attempting to install it on a local server here in our office but I will do it as though I were miles away and remotely accessing it. Installing it is a little concern.. publishing a web/mobile app to that WAS is actually a greater concern. Any link on How to ??? from remote access to a server ?? Once again, I am so thankful of your responses. !!!

Re: installation of the alpha anywhere application server

what you are describing here, using FTP server and such.. is because the installer does not have access to the host server correct?? .. if you had remote access like (PC anywhere or something like that) you would not need to use FTP protocol correct?.. but I will keep your advice for those remote connections that I do not have full access as though I were sitting in front of the server.

            hello Frank,
First of all you have been so helpful to me and I am very thankful..

I have installed the WAS on a remote server with its own public static ip address and I have built in the firewall exception for port 81 to access the WAS. But following the guides online one how to test to see if your WAS was set up correctly.. first it did not have a default page. so it gave me an 403 error "This server does not allow directory browsing".. so I took the index.a5w default page that was on my laptop when I installed the a5 WAS.. and placed in the server C:\A5webroot directory. next it gave me this error.. 500 Internal Server Error.

            Script Error
            Component not found: Grids ???

please help me.. I need to get this server (WAS) up and running.. Thank you so very much for all your advice.. or a helpful link..

Re: installation of the alpha anywhere application server

I would just make a regular a5w page without any grids. See if you can see that page.

If that works then you just need to create your application and then publish it to the remote server.

                ok Dan,
When I first installed the A5 development and WAS on my laptop, and do the remote testing after the mobile app was finished, it worked just fine without me having to add any index.a5w default page ... now I have moved the development and the WAS onto a windows 2008 server. I can not get it to do any remote viewing since?? so now I created a blank default page and called it index.a5w and placed it into the remote server root directory.. c:\A5Webroot and now when I go to the http://ipaddress:81 it does not error anymore but all I get is just a blank webpage.?? no web application. so I am doing something wrong.. do i need to make a link in my default page to open up my application and if yes, how??
Once again, I am very grateful for your advice.

When you refer to local testing not needing a default page, you are talking about using WorkingPreview to view the Alpha Five component you created. When you run your application on the web app server, it does need to target a web page with the A5W extension. Index.a5w is a default page. If you have a dialog or grid you have developed, then yes insert that component on the index.a5w page and publish.

Although you don't really want this --> if you want to browse a web folder for files, go to server configuration (the green icon running on your server), click the Access tab and check the box under Directory Browsing.

                    Hello Son,

Not really sure where you are in the process of building you app. I am thinking you may have accidentally missed something. The best thing to do is to probably watch this video and make sure you preformed the steps in the video.

                    http://wiki.alphasoftware.com/How+to...erver+on+a+VPS

Naturally you need to substitute your remote server with the GoDaddy server. This should help you check your steps and maybe explain the process a little better. You will also probably need to adjust for port 81 verses what the video mentions.

                      Son,

You need to publish your application to the app server, if you just copy something in the webroot then that will only work for plain html (a5w) pages.
Create a document index.a5w & simplu put in the famous sentence "hello world", copy that in the webroot of your server & you'll be able to browse to it.

If you start creating components etc then these have to be put on an a5w page & then the whole project needs to be published.

It may be overwhelming for now but go on & play; in a matter of a few days you'll feel more comfortable.

thank you Dan for that helpful link. that was extremely helpful. I don't know what is going on with the windows 2008 server that is keeping me from entering from the outside?... I can test a default page and get it to work from within that server, but when I go out to another machine and entered in that ip address, it just times out on me.. I am so tempted to just get the godaddy account to show my boss that "look I can do everything you ask me with this VPS server, but not on your server".. they upgraded from windows 2003 server. and it had some old stuff IIS.. we even went and turned off the IIS sites.. and even the WWW publishing servers. if you can think of anything that you have run into in the past that could help me I would be sooooooo appreciated.. and once again, I am so thankful for your advice.

                          Hi Frank,
as it pertain to the default file.. (index.a5w), other then having "Hello World" or something like that, what do I need to have in there
to appropriately link it to the web application. When I was developing the app on my laptop and also having the WAS on the laptop, it just worked so nicely. I have done the remote testing by using the QR code and using my Note II smart phone to scan in the QR code and whaala !! it was running on my smart phone.
Every since I was told to move everything to the windows 2008 server (development and WAS), the best I could get is just running the web browser on that server. I could never do the QR code and have it working from outside of it... even just typing in the IP address in the web browser I get an time out error. If you could think of anything that could help.. please share... I am so much in your debt.. thank you in advance for your prompt assistance..

You have to create a firewall exception for the Alpha application server; currently it is blocking the application server program to talk to the outside world.
