Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Saving Fields from Record to Record

    I could use some help. I have an application that has been working perfectly for more than 2 years. Last week, I finally installed my Alpha Anywhere upgrade (Developer and Application Server), so that I can start using all of the new features. I saved my application in Alpha Anywhere and published it to my server. Aside from other problems I'm having with the new Application Server, one of the biggest problems is that an important feature of my application stopped working.

    In my application, my customer adds lots of records at once to the Detail View of the form that are in the same "Office," "County" and "State", so I programmed the system to retain those fields after you Save (submit) the record and add a New Record. As I said, it has worked flawlessly for more than 2 years. Now, when they add a new record, all 3 of those fields revert to "Null." I'm frustrated because when I test the Grid in "Working Preview," it works perfectly. In "Live Preview" and on the Application Server, the fields revert back to "Null". I've attached 2 files showing the system. In Image1, the record was entered and Saved (submitted). In Image2, you can see that when I clicked New Record, the fields were retained. That was done in "Working Preview" and worked perfectly. On the Application Server (and "Live Preview"), it doesn't work.

    I'd appreciate any help. Here's the code I used:
    AfterUpdateRecord
    function AfterUpdateRecord as v (e as p)

    e.rtc.State2 = e.datasubmitted.State
    e.rtc.County2 = e.datasubmitted.County
    e.rtc.Office2 = e.datasubmitted.Office
    end function

    OnInitialValueCalculate
    function onInitialValueCalculate as v (e as p)

    dim e.rtc.State2 as c
    dim e.rtc.Office2 as c
    dim e.rtc.County2 as c

    'if e.rtc.mydata.State <> "" then
    e.newvalues.State = e.rtc.State2
    e.newvalues.County = e.rtc.County2
    e.newvalues.Office = e.rtc.Office2
    'end if

    end function

    Hopefully, someone can tell me why this isn't working. I'd appreciate it!

    I thought this would be an easy fix for someone... and that I'm just missing something. If anyone has any suggestions, I'd really appreciate it. Right now, I'm stuck.

      I'm not sure why it would have stopped working although I did have problems using e.rtc with dialogs about 2 years ago which might be related.
      Selwyn suggested using state instead of rtc because rtc only works within a single callback to the server.

        I don't know how it works in grids, but in dialogs this works perfect for me:

        {dialog.object}.newRecord({cloneExisting: true, fieldsToNotCopy: 'INVOICE_NUMBER','CUSTOMER_ID'});

        Maybe it is not a to big rewrite if you don't find another solution?
