Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Javascript call to see if a list component is empty

    I have two list's components.
    1 MainList
    2 MainHelpList

    List 2 is linked to list 1 both lists are on the same UX component.

    I would like # 2 not the show up if there is no link between the two lists, how can I do that?

    I have build a javascript but that keeps giving me errors.

    function IfNoRecords(){
    if ({dialog.componentname}.MainHelpList.RECORDCOUNT == 0)
    {
    return false;
    }
    return true;

    };

    I have placed this in the Show/hide expression (server side) of the MainHelpList.

    Hope someone can help me.

    Thanks
    Roelof

    Javascript cannot be used for a server side expresssion; you have to use it for a client side expression. So first step is to put it in the client side Show/Hide expression

      Sorry this is in the client side expression, but I really don't care how I do it, I just don't want the list to show up if there are no records in it.

          No not yet.
          The only way that it can be done I think is to do a check before the grid gets drawn

            Hey Roelof,

            You mentioned grid... but I think you mean UX... just checking.

            This took a bit of fiddling but is quite easy to implement. This video will show you what you need to do and why.

            http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqNm6XnwKIE

            And here is the code used. The code goes into an XBasic function which is run from the Child List Server-Side After Query event. I don't think you can use the Client-side Show/Hide Expression because it gets fired before the child list is complete. The idea is to wrap the Child List in a Container so that you can show and hide the container.

            Code:
            if e.recordsInQuery = 0 then
            	e.javascript = "$('{dialog.Componentname}.V.R1.CONTAINER_1').style.display='none';"
            else
            	e.javascript = "$('{dialog.Componentname}.V.R1.CONTAINER_1').style.display='block';var listObj = {dialog.object}.getControl('LIST2');listObj.refresh();"
            end if

              Thank you VERY much this works great.

              The only issue I see now is that the lines around the list are gone. The list on the left has the lines around it and the list on the right does not anymore after I added the Xbasic
              And the list box was higher than the other box so I had to add some spacing above it to make it line up with the list on the left

                Re: Javascript call to see if a list component is empty

                My child list style is unaffected... it is a normal looking list... as it should be.

                My child list is inside a container, and the container has Prevent Container Float checked, to ensure it lines up. And it behaves properly whether the child list is below or beside the parent list.

                There must be something else going on with your UX

                    Here's something interesting. You're using GrTan as a style? Or MobTan. This styles don't behave quite the same as iOS or Slate.

                    Try this. Instead of using a plain container... change the Container Type to NoFloat. I think that will help.

                    In my example I have a container around the child list only. Putting a container around the parent list as well changes the behaviour.

                      Thanks David, I started from scratch with my layout and now it is working fine, I must have somewhere clicked and that screwed it up.

                      Thanks
