Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

UX control names changed to label names

My UX controls names have changed to the names I used in the labels. I know this sounds crazy but I built my UX and carefully named each control and save it. An
example of what has is as follows: The control that was called "name_F" now is "First Name:". "First Name:" was the label name and now all the controls have the label names. Has anyone experienced anything like this? Does anyone know how to fix it without rebuilding the entire UX.

Not sure why that happened, but you're in luck. Close the UX. From the web controlpanel right click on the UX name and select "restore backup". Select any previous backup that you wish.

Re: UX control names changed to label names

I have daily backups but I have made so many changes to my UX and if I just go to the backup I will loose allot of MySQL select statements, Xbasic, Java and any added on controls. Do I have a way to just swap out the controls while keeping the rest of my component.

I also saw this in a 2nd UX where the controls took the names of the labels although it is still working properly and the bindings are still correct. In my other UX I have a control that should be called "adr_3" but instead the control changed the name to the label name "address:" in the properties. The "variable name" and the "field name" are "adr_3" but the control name in the column of controls is "address:". How can I use my backup to fix this?

Bill - I've never seen this happen. But I wonder if Menu / Recalculate All Controls might fix this?

Never mind your daily backup. Have you tried to do exactly what I said?

If you that you won't lose your latest version, since the exact same method allows you to restore that as well.

I'm doing the recalulating right now. As soon as it's done I will write.

No luck with the recalculating. What about copying the control to the clipboard then correcting it?

If I make a copy to clipboard of the controls that are incorrect. How do I know which names in the coding to change. After checking there are 5 places where the incorrect names are? Any ideas.

Re: UX control names changed to label names

Ok! Here it is for anyone who may screw up as much as I did. The answer to correcting the UX controls when there names change is the following.

I've had to go to each control and copy it to the clipboard then right click to use the find command where you can locate the control names and then change them to what they should be. Of course after changing the names you would save to clipboard and then past it back into the UX controls. Next you need to delete the original incorrect control. After that step is to make sure your table form/view looks the way it should. In my case i used the freeform and was able to go and correct the control names in the form.

Good luck to any others who find themselves in this ridiculous position.

PS: The cause of this issue I believe was when I combined 3 components into one and many of the controls had the same names. The problem is you won't know about the issue because everything will work fine. You just won't be able to change any of the control names.

Do not do what I have done!!! Add me to the top of the idiot list for not checking my control names.

Re: UX control names changed to label names

Bill - it also sounds to me that you have one huge UX. Selwyn wrote about this a while ago, and I have long used the practice, of keeping smaller UX components and then using the many as embedded, popup, filling a div or whatever is appropriate.

This approach will also simplify your editing and make your end product faster. Even now I'm finding that some of my smaller UXs are growing and I have plans to split them into smaller pieces when I can.

Thanks for the advice. It has been on my mind the entire time I have been building my internet application. When and where I can use the embedded features and divs I do but I have an application that is all data and could have been done in windows but I believe windows is out and the future is the internet apps. I'll do my best to follow yours and Mr Rabins advice as I know you are right.
