Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Call grid with filled-in detail view fields?

    Hi
I have a grid setup as detail view (always show) on top and the grid on bottom. I would like that every time i call this grid for the following to happen:

    1) the grid is in 'adding new record' mode
    2) the detail view fields are pre-filled with values i have to pass it upon calling it. I am calling the grid in a button click either from another grid or from an UX

Is there an easy way to accomplish this?

    Thanks
    Jaime

Re: Call grid with filled-in detail view fields?

Probably in the ongridrender event you can put {grid.Object}.detailViewNewRecord(); to enter a new record then use {grid.Object}.setValue(GridPart,GridFieldName,[row - omit for Search and Detail View],value [,honorChangeEvent]) to set the values
    Frank

Tell me and I'll forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I'll understand

Re: Call grid with filled-in detail view fields?

Along the same lines I have a question that is probably super simple and admittedly I have tried and tried and as usual I am probably close but no cigar again. The Grid/Detail view is made from a table called "customers"
so the variable I want to create is from the field value of another table in the database...

When I open the detail view, I want to have a field called
"State" get populated from a variable.
The variable should reference (point to) a table called
        "companies"
        a field called
        "State"
        Where
        "company_id = session.var1"

(session.var1 is the variable used to filter all of my components in the tabbedui)

so afar I have tried numerous iterations of sql_lookup in OnGridInitialize
        as well as
Dimming a new global, variable called "whatstate"
and putting = session.whatstate as the default value in the detail views intial value

        I have tried args, etc.

I am certain my syntax is whats killing me so I spent hours going over different ways and reading the help wiki on dimming things.

so if someone could show me how i can create a variable that holds a field value for a particular users entry, in another table - that would be great.
BTW there is only one entry (row) in the table that can belong to them so I just want to find that one row and get the value in the "State" column so I can use it as a "default" value.

so the end result is if you were a user of my app and you went to fill out a new customer record, the default value for state would be the same as the logged in users account which is held in a table called "companies"

Hope i made clear what I wanna do as well as how I have tried and cannot figure it out, lol

        Thanks in advance!

Re: Call grid with filled-in detail view fields?

Charles, are you trying to test this under Working Preview mode? If so then I would suggest running under W.A.S. and not WP mode - Session Variables do not work the same under Working Preview Mode. Also, just to be sure, add the session variable(s) to all the "Published Session Variables" properties of all the components involved. If you have a dropdown control (not an editbox with lookup) and you are setting the Initial Value field to something like:
          =session.var1

then that should work to set the default in the dropdown for new records. If you are needing to filter the choices in a dropdown based on a value from a session variable then in the in the SQL genie you just switch to "expert mode" and add your filter condition with the database field name on the left and "session.var1" on the right of the condition. If your version of Alpha doesn't let you put in "session.xxxx" on the right using the builder then just type the expression you want directly into the SQL statement box.

No I do a live test, I publish then check it out. I think I remember Alpha5 even warns you that security doesnt work in LP or WP
Although, I did not even consider a drop down box.
I finally figured out some other major bummer I had going on concerning my login system and trying to wean myself off of the ulink field so I am congratulating myself in the mirror right now over that hurdle. I am sure many of us have no-one to turn to and high five when we learn something so you guys probably all know what I mean, lol My wife just stares at me like a deer in the headlights as I try to explain my joy in solving one thing or another...I might as well be explaining photosynthesis and martian dance routines.

            So in any event Rich
This is something I think I will re-visit when I get some other things done, and hopefully I will have learned enough through doing something else that this will be much easier then. I am glad I posted because I never thought of putting a variable in a drop-down so thats awesome - thanks!
