Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Updating Records in Child Table

I am looking for the best method to accomplish this....

I am using MySql and Navicat

I have a user table (Parent), and a loads table (Child). I have corresponding UX's.

I have Index fields in each table that are int, primary keys: user.index_PK and loads.index_PK.

In the loads table, I have a foreign key set up that references the user.index_PK.

If a user changes their last name, for example, I need to update a last_name field in the loads table in all records where loads.user_FK = user.index_PK

Should I be using triggers in MySql? Or is there another way?

Re: Updating Records in Child Table

Uhm. Why is the last name in the Child table instead of the Parent table if the Parent is the user table (assuming the last name is that users last name)? In other words, you already have a FK in the Child table that links it to the Parent table and the Parent table should have the last name. The information only needs to be in one table or the other, that way you don't run into stuff like this. It's perfectly accessible from either table if you have the tables linked by PK/FK Why not get rid of that field in your child table?

Good question. I had set it up that way, and this is what was happening:

The name control in the child UX is a lookup edit-combo that gets it's value from the parent table. The lookup list is filtered to show only active users. For some reason, the filter was causing any record in the child table that did not have an active user associated with it would show a blank value in the name control. If I removed the filter, it would show the correct value in all records. So I created a name field in the child table, which led to the reason I asked the question in my original post.

AH, you are certainly correct in that the information should only exist in one table. There may be something else that is causing my original problem.

still not clear why you need a value in the child record from the parent table.

I think we should focus on your initial problem then, instead of working with a problematic workaround that requires the tables be setup in a less than optimal manner.

If I understand, you were getting a bunch of blanks in your lookup edit-combo. The problem is most likely how you are writing your query to make the choices. Did you try using whatever MySQL's version of "DISTINCT" is? I'm more familiar with MSSQL.

Re: Updating Records in Child Table

Thanks for your help. As it turns out, it was a combination of issues that caused the original problem. I am still in development, and working with data imported from an old database. I am correcting some issues with the structure of the old database. In the data import process I was importing fields from the legacy child table into the new child MySql table. I should have been importing only the foreign key field, and importing any other fields from the parent table. I have revised my import processes and some data binding. It appears to be working now. There are no blank values in the lookup field, and I can apply the filter with no ill effects.

I had made it more complicated than it needed to be, and was looking for a method to fix it. But the correct solution was go back about three steps and fix the underlying structure.

Joe, thanks for letting us know how things turned out. Your explanation may very well help other "travelers" who wonder into this thread down the line.-- tom
