Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    How do I know if a component is being opened as normal or as a lookup?

    Hi all,

    I want to use a grid as a lookup on a field on a form, and Alpha seems to know somehow when a grid is used in that way because it prepends a 'Select' hyperlink to each line of the grid.

    How do I test for that and then are there JavaScript or xBasic points that become 'available' when the grid is used as a lookup?

    What I would like is to perform an Ajax callback when the Select hyperlink is clicked ... something like 'beforeSelect/onSelect/canSelect/afterSelect'. For example, to decrement a stock value if the grid is looking up a stock item to be 'consumed'.

    Thanks,

    Phil

    On a "form"... on a desktop Form? Or a UX?

      Let's assume a UX Component.

      It doesn't look like there is a built-in process for doing this... but... looking at what Alpha is doing with that Select link... there is a way to, in a sense, replace Alpha's function with our own.

      I don't know if this is quite advisable... but an interesting exercise none the less.

      That Select link you see in the Grid is rendered by Alpha on the fly. In that link is an onclick event which calls an Alpha function... for example...

      Code:
      DLG1_GRD_CUSTOM_XJOY_GridObj.lookupGridSelectRow('DLG1','CUSTOMER_ID','O',4); return false;
      What we're going to do is take over the Select link... put our code in. We still use Alpha's code to return the value we're after from the grid... but we call that in our own function.

      In effect, we're using the DOM's hierarchy to our advantage. I don't know if that's kosher, but it works.

      Have a look...

        David, that is great. I always wondered how to do something like that.

        BTW, you can use {Grid.RowNumber} when you are defining the html for the select link! The following seemed to work in the select link label:

        <a href="#" onclick="myFunction({Grid.RowNumber});" class="GrBlueLink"><span>Select</span></a>
        Then in the js function you are guaranteed to have the correct row number that was clicked.

        function myFunction(rowNum) {
        alert(' in "myFunction" row = ' + rowNum);
        }

          Hi David,

          On a grid form ... define a field as a look up field using a component for the look up. I'll have a look later at your solution. I am sure it will work in the same way as on a UX component.

          Thanks again (as always)

            Phil,

            For a Grid-to-Grid process the parameters for the "lookupGridSelectRow" method are a bit different...

            Code:
            {Grid.Object}.lookupGridSelectRow('GRID1','CUSTOMER_ID','G',currValue);
            Where currValue is whatever you've selected as your current value in the grid to return.

              Rich,

              I'm wondering how you're using the target Lookup Grid. Are you setting clicking on the row first and then clicking "Select"? Using {Grid.RowNumber} as a parameter in the function always returns, in my case, 1 because that's the value of the Customer_Id in the 1st row.

                Hi David,

                This is what I am doing ... and the Ajax callback is to decrement the stock level of the frame when it has been selected.

                http://screencast.com/t/RDptnvCznFi

                So it's from a 'Grid Form' or Detail View of the Grid. Sorry, I sometime get caught up in using Clarion naming rather than Alpha ... 25 years is hard to shake! So, which version should I use, in this case?

                Thanks,

                Phil

                  David,
                  I was just clicking on the select button, no need to select the row first. My test case is an updateable grid with textbox defined with a Lookup grid that opens in a popup. I did NOT test it from a UX or when the lookup is used as a dropdown instead of a popup.

                    To answer the question: "How do I know if a component is being opened as normal or as a lookup?"

                    Try this in the server-side "function OnGridInitialize as v (e as p)" for the called grid:

                    e._state.CalledForLookup = "N"
                    if variable_exists("request.variables.__formAction")
                    if UPPER(request.variables.__formAction) = UPPER("showLookupGrid")
                    e._state.CalledForLookup = "Y"
                    end if
                    end if
                    ....
