Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Grid group totals not right with mysql with SELECT DISTINCT

I have a problem with one of my grids after converting my application to a mysql backend. The group totals are mostly doubling as can be seen in this screenshot.
    group totals.jpg

The reason for this is the group totaling is including records from my table that it shouldn't be. My sql statement that the grid is based on is correct and the grid shows only the records it is supposed to be showing. I included the total hours in the grid detail just to make sure that those hours are calculated correctly for each record. What appears to be happening is the group totaling isn't paying attention to my SELECT statement which includes a DISTINCT. The grid is correct, the totals are not.

Is this a bug? It seems like this isn't a problem with my sql statement so I hesitate to even include it in my description. Shouldn't the group totals work on the results of my SQL statement and what is in my grid?

Thanks in advance for any insight you can offer on this problem.

    Hey Lisa,

You'd have to show your Select Statement and a screenshot of your Group Footer dialog. Something else is going on.

I just put together a quick grid with a Group Footer Summary Total, using DISTINCT on a SQL Statement and it's running properly.

Re: Grid group totals not right with mysql with SELECT DISTINCT

Thanks for the quick reply, David! It doesn't make sense to me that the group footer wouldn't work off the results of the query or what's in the grid. Here's my query that the grid is based on:

      SELECT DISTINCT planhrsworked.PLANID, planhrsworked.HRSWORKID, planhrsworked.NAICONTACTID, planhrsworked.HOURSWORKED, planhrsworked.MINWORKED, planhrsworked.TASKTYPEID, tasktypes.TASK, (Hoursworked + (Minworked / 60)) AS Totalhrs, planhrsworked.ENTRYDT, contacts.LASTNAME, planhrsworked.NOTES, planinfo.PLANNAME
      FROM (planhrsworked planhrsworked
      INNER JOIN contacts contacts
      ON planhrsworked.NAICONTACTID = contacts.CONTACTID
      LEFT OUTER JOIN planinfo planinfo
      ON planhrsworked.PLANID = planinfo.PLANID
      LEFT OUTER JOIN tasktypes tasktypes
      ON planhrsworked.TASKTYPEID = tasktypes.TASKID )
WHERE contacts.CONTACTID = :userid OR 'Administrators' = :mygroups
      ORDER BY planinfo.PLANNAME, planhrsworked.ENTRYDT DESC, contacts.LASTNAME

Here's a screenshot of my group dialog:
      group dialoag.jpg

The reason I have to use distinct is that I link my main grid table, planhrsworked, back to a table, planinfo, to get the name of the plan. However, the plan can exist more than once in the table based on the year of the plan. I just need to get any match for the plan in the planinfo table to get the correct name. I don't want the user to have to select which year because it's not really important for this grid. So, using distinct gives me the correct results and everything else works perfectly.

Do you have an understanding how the group footer works? Wouldn't it use the existing query results?

Re: Grid group totals not right with mysql with SELECT DISTINCT

It's not really evident from this what's going wrong. Because the Group Footer Summary Total works on a single select statement, I'm guessing the joins are messing things up. If you set up a grid with just the select from planhrsworked is it ok? I would try that first. Start with that single select and start working forward until your totals get message up.
