Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

User selects date to filter report?

    Hi Guys,

Is there a video to show how to create a dialog date picker, that would then use the value of the variable to filter a report?

If there is not one, would some kind person point me in the right direction as to how to do it.

User presses a button, calendar pops up, user selects date and that date is used to filter report.

    TIA

    Hi Keith

One such way would be to use the onchange event for the date control to set a session variable via an ajax callback and then set the value of an argument to that session variable which is used in the filter for the report.

    Kind regards

Re: User selects date to filter report?

          here are the steps:
first create a report based on your data source ( for me it was sqlDataSource)
while defining set the where clause and set an argument called date with a type date, preview and adjust the dialog box to your liking. and then design the report as you like it.
when designing it will pop up date dialog, for that any date will be fine.
once report is designed save and if you have component security make it always allowed or as you like, if the report needs to be restricted.
now create a button somewhere you need it, I used in the tabbedui.
and action javascript call the report and set the argument bindings to prompt at runtime.
          that will do
if you do not succeed let me know. I will post a screencast. this computer does not have a mic. so I will do it tomorrow.
          thanks for reading

            Hi Govindan,

I really would appreciate one of your super screencasts. I'm lost right at the beginning where you say, "while defining set the where clause and set an argument called date with a type date,"

Are you going to the Conference?

take a look at these screencasts, I just plugged in a mic I had, have not tested the sound quality yet.
but the pictures should explain by themselves.

                Hi Govindan,

Many thanks for videos. You are right, the sound is not good but I was able to follow your demonstration it was very helpful.

I have now created a UX with a calendar and the print button. The selected date is used in the argument to filter the report.

                Thanks again for your help.

                  where will the button be?
say in a grid that you show all records and press the button and popup appears asking for a date, you supply and press enter the report appears?

                    Hi Govindan,

The button will have to be on a Tabbed UI, the same as your video.

Is there a video to show how the argument (value), can be used in the header of the report?

Re: User selects date to filter report?

it should be simple for a veteran like yourself.
( go to report on the top and select properties, select region, then select body for report header and click has page header, just added to show where i am going, not that i thought you wouldn't know )
then on the header drag in the text from toolbox and put in any text you like
then right click the date field from the detail portion of the report select copy then paste, the one that appears left upper corner, and drag it to where ever you want.
voila, you should have what you want. alpha lives up to the proclamation you don't need to write code, at least here.

Thanks for the compliment, of regarding me as an Alpha veteran. I assume you meant it as such!!

You are right, I do know how to use a variable on a report, but that is for the desktop.

I would like to know how to use the value of the argument in a web report.

Thanks for video, that is a very interesting but goes not quite answer my question

I'm trying to understand how to use value of the variable, not the value of the field.

Instead of the date, how would you use the name of the person logged in on the report?
