Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Tabbed Master Templates - adding tabs for additional grids

There's a really useful video from Selwyn which explains how to edit the master template to add tabs to split apart the various components of a single grid; including any linked content:

    http://screencast.com/t/NDY4NDg0YmE

What I would like to do is to add further tabs which include further non-linked grids - thereby creating one tabbed page for all of the application grid components.

I basically need the functionality of a tabbed UI, but I can't use this as this would create tabs within tabs - which I don't want..

Is it possible to paste the code from one grid into the Master template from another ? or can somebody point me in the right direction for this..

    Thx, Steve

Like most things in Alpha there are a number of ways to go.

You will notice that the video gives each DIV an id so you can inject content without using any code.

    Step 1
Build the structure you want in the grid creating blank DIV's for all future content.
    Step 2
Place this grid on a UX
    Step 3
Place all other grids you wish to use on a UX wrapping each grid in a container, choose type Injectable content.
    Step 4
For each container tell it the DIV id to inject into.

This becomes a big page so it may not be the best way to achieve you ultimate aim.

You can also build grids on demand, this will make a lighter page but there will be a wait as you click between tabs.

        Hi Michael..

I've spent a little time with this and I don't think it's going to do what I need..

As far as I know the only way to show linked (child) data in separate tabs is through the customized Master template, as per Selwyns screencast..

This works fine with showing grids linked to the data in the top-level/main table (ie Master/detail) - but content linked to the linked-content (grandchild) doesn't use the same Master Template..

I need to find a way of moving the linked content placeholder definition from the second master template to the first, so that there's only one row of tabs..

        Any thoughts..?

You are going from a Desktop application to a Web application, and that takes re-thinking your user interface.

I took a look at the Desktop app you sent me, and I must say it is the cleanest Desktop application I have seen. Most are way to busy, your's is very clear.

Your first post sounds like you want to use a Page Layout component, placing all of your components inside. And then either run that page layout from a single-tab tabbedUI or directly on an A5W page (no extra tabs). But also, wanted to suggest you just use the components out-of-the-box as much as possible - users rarely appreciate the mountain of time we spend on perfecting their layout.
