Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Assistance needed on approach to setup disconnected application

Iv'e read through the documentation on disconnected apps and have a firm grasp on its functionality. However, one of my current projects is extremely simple and I am not sure what features I should use from version 3 to implement it. The particulars for the project and my questions are listed below:

    1. The app requires a mobile user to register 4 GPS locations for a specific job location (quasi boundary points). The user will go from 1 location to another registering 4 points for each location.
    2. The data returned to the server will include the 4 points, the employee id of the person registering the points, and the job id of the location.
    3. Functionally, all the user has to do is press a button to register points 1 through 4. Entering the job is not necessary because the server will determine the job id automatically based on the first GPS location recorded. The only client side validation I can think of is to verify that 4 seperate points were recorded.
    4. This info will never be edited but the user will be allowed to delete a point if necessary.
    5. The application needs to be disconnected as there is a good chance some of the locations will be outside the phones service area.

Questions: How would you design a disconnected app that is nothing more than a button and some arbitrary data that is submitted to the server when there is a connection? Do I absolutely have to create a detail view of the list? If so, would the list just be the button and the detail view the data points?

Any help on how to set this up is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    James

    Hi James,
Well it looks like a time attendance punching clock. Since you already know the 4 GPS locations ahead, I guess those records will be created for that user and show them in the list so they can select the one they will acknowledge, punch, register or whatever terminology you want to use.

Now, should there be any validation at the time of the punch just to make sure the mobile device is actually where it should be at the time of the punch?

Do I absolutely have to create a detail view of the list? If so, would the list just be the button and the detail view the data points?
Yes, you should provide enough information to the user, specially if they are allowed to delete the punch or registration of being there.

Now what are you really try to accomplish with this application, if the GPS points are already know, why do you need any confirmation form the end user?

      Hi James,

Sounds an interesting project. I have a question for you, can a second Job be started before the first one is finished?

James - We've been looking through all this as well, and will be spending the next few days building some model stuff for our needs. While it's clear that the List Control is a great way to go, it's not the only way. In fact, we have a lot of "legacy" stuff esp. using repeating sections where we want to use this feature. So, we're going to just roll our own using some of Alpha's features and some standard javascript.

A big lesson so far: Don't think too hard - it's easier than it looks (though it does help to be decent with Xbasic and javascript). And take a look at what's under the hood with the objects created with the List Control genie.

Mine is a logic question here: If you are determining by GPS location, what if they are a few feet off? Will there be a range for each job site that will be acceptable? I use my phone's GPS for geocaching and it is accurate to about 9 feet... when it is a clear path to sky. Personally, I'd recommend having some type of secondary job site verification so it can determine the location if it can't find a match...
