Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Ghandi, probably has to do with my screen resolution... there is no far right scroll bar, but I have accomplished my mission for now

      OK, I have implemented Steve's wonderful suggestions and here is the new test component. Seems to be working well. Thank you, Steve.

        Re: List Control Alphabet Buttons - making my own

        Well, I thought all was working well until I opened my stuff in a tabbed ui. My component has an argument that is used to show data for a selected job. When I open the component for the first selected job in a tab pane, the alphabet buttons work fine. THEN if I go back and select another job and open the component in a second tab pane, the alphabet buttons, WHETHER clicked on the first tab pane OR the second tab pane are executing the search on the second tab pane. This is better shown in this video: http://screencast.com/t/uxzwnlGUV

        Here is the onClick code I am using for button B (for example):
        Code:
        alphabetSearch('B');
        Here is the javascript function I am using (based on Steve's suggestion):
        Code:
        [CODE]function alphabetSearch(sv) {
        	filter = 'lower( left(SUB_CODE_TITLE, 1) ) = lower(\''+ sv + '\')'
        	{dialog.object}._filterList('LIST1',filter,'','');

        }
        [/CODE]

        If anyone has any idea why this could be happening, please let me know. Thanks.

          Re: List Control Alphabet Buttons - making my own

          I don't have an answer but I did take a look at the behaviour using firebug

          In a tabbed UI I have three versions of the component. When these are opened up in different tabs Alpha as normal gives it's own reference identification. The first screenshot attached shows the three ID's.

          I used one of the letter button filters in the third tab and it behaved correctly and the Ajax Callback shows the ID that was allocated to that list.

          However, as you noticed, using the filter buttons in the other versions of the list filter the original one. Looking at the Ajax Callbacks, the same reference is being sent i.e. the reference of the list in the third tab. It's actually sending the ID of the last list that was opened.

          This could be a bug but it could also be something with the context of when the filter is used and may need a pointer of some sort (to other than just the 'LIST1' reference)

            Re: List Control Alphabet Buttons - making my own

            Well, I decided to use the ButtonList control like Steve and David were talking about and use the Static JSON and the template there for alphabet buttons. I ended up with the same issue and thought it might be a bug, so sent it to Alpha. Selwyn wrote back explaining that it was not a bug and that the javascript function I was using was being a global function. SO... all is working now and here is the new code behind the onClick of the buttonList:

            Code:
            var searchLetter = {dialog.object}.getValue('buttonList1');
            {dialog.object}.alphabetSearch(searchLetter);
            and here is the javascript function code:
            Code:
            {dialog.object}.alphabetSearch = function(sv) {
            	filter = 'lower( left(CompanyName, 1) ) = lower(\''+ sv + '\')'
            	this._filterList('LIST1',filter,'','');
            }

              Re: List Control Alphabet Buttons - making my own

              Further info from Selwyn:

              "p.s. another approach would be to keep the global function, but then pass in a pointer to the dialog object. for example

              function alphabetSearch(obj,sv){
              filter = 'lower( left(CompanyName, 1) ) = lower(\''+ sv + '\')'
              obj._filterList('LIST1',filter,'','');
              }

              then when you call the function from the button list you would do

              alphabetSearch({dialog.object},sv)
