Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Add List control to a repeating section

    Add List control to a repeating section

    I want to add a list control into a repeating section.

    The difficult part is that I want the list to have a different filter based on the value of a control inside the repeating section.

    I have a table structure where the related records are three levels deep.

    If I could put a repeating section inside of a repeating section, then I wouldn't need to do anything fancy - but I can't do that.

    So I want to make the main UX be the master record, the first repeating section show the related records, and I want the list control to be the third tier - showing the records that are related to the records in the repeating section.

    Sounds simple right?

    But the population part of the list control does not seem to understand what it means to be inside a repeating section. There is no way to specify which row of the repeating section it should grab the filter data from.

    Can someone give me a push in the right direction?

    How would you create such a structure within a UX?

    Would it be acceptable to put the list on the UX and filter it by the row that has focus?
    So you would only have one list control and it would display the child records of the row that has focus.

      Yes, That sounds like a good solution.

      What I have done now (after speaking with Selwyn) is setup two list controls, and no repeating sections. But if I could allow an easier edit of the first "list" by making it a repeating section, that will work even better.

      Can you recommend an event (or two) I could use to refresh the list? It would be nice of the first row of the repeating section was automatically used to fill the list when the ux was loaded.

        Re: Add List control to a repeating section

        Hi Larry

        The Javascript

        var rn = {dialog.Object}.getRepeatingSectionActiveRow('R_COLOUR' ,true);

        var val = {dialog.Object}.getValue('SIZE:rn');

        {dialog.Object}.setValue('Filter',val );

        The first line finds the active row in the repeating section
        The second line gets the value of the size field in that line
        The final line sets the value of the field filter.

        So with the dropdown I use the onChange event
        I then find the active row
        I use the click event of the repeating section to reset the active row during edits
        I then filter the list every time the field 'FILTER' changes.

        I have used simple tables to show my idea but I am sure it will work with complex arrangements.

          Re: Add List control to a repeating section

          Thank you,

          I was able to use your code to get done what I needed to get done.

          HOWEVER - there is something about the code you should know.

          Your code is not doing exactly what you think it is doing.

          Look closely at your "var val" statement. the rn is inside the single quotes - so it is not actually sending the row number. If you change your code to this:

          var val = {dialog.Object}.getValue('SIZE');

          {dialog.Object}.setValue('Filter',val );

          It will have the exact same affect. (I know, because that is how my code is now.)

          The getValue, when used in a repeating section, will get the value on the current row automatically. If you want to control the row, your statement would have to look something like this:

          var rn = {dialog.Object}.getRepeatingSectionActiveRow('R_COLOUR' ,true);

          var val = {dialog.Object}.getValue('SIZE:' + rn);

          {dialog.Object}.setValue('Filter',val );

          I didn't figure that out myself - I had the code in the same way you did and it worked fine.

          Then I showed it to Dan Hooley who helped me figure out how to get it to fire the first time (before anyone clicks on it), and he was amazed it worked in the first place! Apparently, Alpha was smart enough to strip the :rn out of the getvalue as meaningless.

            Thanks I did not realise Alpha returned the current row.

            Also I am sorry I did not notice the stupid mistake with the Javascript.

            I used the poor code in the on change event of the drop down to make it fire first time.

            The interesting thing is if you comment out finding the selected row it still works so Alpha is truly clever.
