Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

  • Universal Installer

Anyone have success with the Universal Installer. I cannot get it to work. Trying to install the most recent pre-release.

Is it still possible to download the installation file?

I can't find any documentation in the Installer.

There have been several updates to the Installer, so you may want to install that first (even though it says you don't have to). Then, if the pre-release isn't on the screen, switch to "Available" and see it it is there. The installer tries to do too much and guess what you want, so it doesn't always guess correctly. It would be nice if you could opt for a "manual" mode and pick what you want yourself instead of being a slave to the machine..

There have been issues, I did manage to install the per-release yesterday but there was still a problem with mapped drives, but I think today's update should fix them not tested it yet

I just downloaded the installer today from the link on the pre-release page. Installer v.12.0.6969.0

I can select the Nightly build 6969 in the Available tab > options.

        Options.png

        But the most recent pre-release from https://aadocuments.s3.amazonaws.com...easeNotes.Html is Build 6969- 5519 19 AUG 2020 - 7:15 AM
        The time stamps don't match.
After the install "completes successfully", the installed tab says I have 2 developer editions installed:

        Installed.png

The "Stable Build" launch button launches 6699-5464 - but it says (see image) that 6945 is installed.

The "Nightly Build" button does nothing.

I've had the same issues and would much prefer to going back to being able to download patches as we see fit.

What I have discovered though is you will see two different instances available to upgrade in the installer if you have an icon on your desktop or in your taskbar in addition to the start menu.

If you only update one instance, it will only update one of them.

Try loading from both icons to confirm...

I've yet to figure out the logic with Application Server when it is being run via AlwaysUp. Cannot figure out how to get that instance to update...

Is anyone brave enough to run the installer on a production server? I'm not.

Not me. I've used it with success on my development environment. I wish it were still an option to download the files until the universal installer has been thoroughly tested (seems official releases are downloadable ... for now!)

I have had many issues since the new installer came out last week, I have worked through them with Terry and Selwyn and today's version seems to work well and I like the way I have options on what I install and which I run. I do need to sort it on my server yet though

I had a session with Terry today and learned a lot. I will post a summary when I get time.

Half my trouble is the time difference, when it's all getting technical over there I'm on second glass of wine!

Here is what I learned from my session with Terry:

The Universal Installer is new, and is a pre-release product.

It uses new default installation folders
Developer Edition C:\Program Files (x86)\Alpha Anywhere
Application Server (WAS) C:\Program Files (x86)\Alpha Anywhere Application Server
Application Server for IIS C:\Program Files (x86)\Alpha Anywhere Application Server for IIS
Runtime C:\Program Files (x86)\Alpha Anywhere Runtime

If you have been using the former default installation folder, as I have, and you just accept the installation defaults, you will end up with two or more installations. You can see from the image in my post #4 that it did detect both installations.

You may or may not want multiple installations. Your choice. Beware of modifying your project components using different versions!

If installing in a folder where there is a previous installation, it will ask if you want to overwrite the existing files.

In my case the installation labeled "Nightly Build" did not install correctly the first time, and would not launch Alpha. So to re-do the installation, delete all the files in C:\Program Files (x86)\Alpha Anywhere (or wherever you had previously installed), then run the installer again. That worked for me.

Currently the pre-release versions, now referred to as "Nightly Build" will only be installable using the Universal Installer. The official releases are still available by downloading the installation files, but at some point it will be also switched to the Universal Installer.

Since the Universal Installer is a pre-release product, expect some bumps in the road, and it needs documentation. It does look promising.

Earlier today I used it to install the WAS. It worked with no issues.

Hey dude. Did Terry tell you how to instrall on D:\Program Files (x86)\Alpha Anywhere? The old system allowed you to pick any drive. Or do I need to redesign my server?

All installs have can be directed to a particular folder. Check the More button, then Options.

On multiple computers I have found that the installer isn't detecting an 'Installed' Runtime version so have to go the more confusing for end users 'Available' tab which wants to install to a different directory.

Is it not seeing the original install just because of the directory?

Is it recommended to blow up the old install to improve the behavior?

Can this be done without messing up the myriad of preferences we have set up?

                              Any guidance appreciated.
